Initial Operation
Observe correct mains voltage: The voltage of
the power source must agree with the voltage
specified on the nameplate of the machine.
Equipment marked with 230 V can also be con-
nected to 220 V.
Switching On and Off
To start the machine, push the On/Off switch 1
and keep it pushed.
Lock the pushed On/Off switch 1 by pressing the
lock-on button 2.
To switch off the machine, release the On/Off
switch 1 or push and release it then.
Speed and Sanding Belt Pre-selection
(PBS 7 AE)
The necessary belt speed can be pre-selected
with thumbwheel 6, even during operation.
The required belt speed depends on the material
being sanded and is to be determined by practi-
cal testing (see application table at the end of the
operating instruction manual).
Operating Instructions
Removal rate and surface quality are determined
by the speed (PBS 7 AE) and grade of the sand-
ing belt. The higher the belt speed, the more ma-
terial is removed and the finer the sanded sur-
face.
Work using the least possible sanding pressure;
the machine's own weight is sufficient for a good
sanding performance. This gives longer life to the
sanding belt, makes the workpiece surface
smoother and reduces the energy consumption.
Apply the machine to the workpiece only when
switched on. Work with moderate feed and carry
out the sanding with parallel and overlapping
strokes. Sand in the direction of the grain; sand-
ing across the grain produces an uneven sanding
effect.
Particularly when sanding coats of varnish, it is
possible that these melt and smear the surface of
the workpiece and the sanding belt. Therefore
sanding dust must be extracted as described un-
der "Dust Extraction".
Worn, clogged or torn sanding belts can damage
the workpiece. The sanding belts should there-
fore be changed in good time.
A sanding belt used for sanding metal should not
be used for other materials.

Stationary Use
In stationary use with the parallel and angle guide
(accessories), trimmings and profiles, as an ex-
ample, can be sanded to shape.
PBS 7 A/AE: (see figures
Turn the machine upside down for stationary fas-
tening on a work bench. Position two screw
clamps 15 (commercial accessory) into the re-
cesses 7 intended for this and thoroughly clamp
down the machine. Additionally, the parallel and
angle guide 14 (accessory) can be used. The
threads 4 are the fastening points for the parallel
guide.
PBS 7 AE SET: (see figure
Fasten the base unit on the upper side of the belt
sander with the two screws. Tightly clamp down
the base unit with the machine using the two
screw clamps 15. Additionally, the parallel and
angle guide 14 (accessory) can be used. The
threads 4 are the fastening points for the parallel
guide.
Maintenance and Cleaning
Before any work on the machine itself, pull
the mains plug.
For safe and proper working, always keep
the machine and the ventilation slots clean.
Remove adherent sanding dust with a point
brush. Remove the access clip 13 from time to
time and clean the inside area, to ensure opti-
mum extraction performance (see figure
If the machine should fail despite the care taken
in manufacturing and testing procedures, repair
should be carried out by an after-sales service
centre for Bosch power tools.
In all correspondence and spare parts orders,
please always include the 10-digit order number
given on the nameplate of the machine.
