B. CONNECTING THE CHARGER TO THE 12V SOURCE AND 12V
TARGET BATTERY.
SOURCE - a 12V engine start battery system in a vehicle or a stand-alone 12V
battery supplying DC power to the TM-501 battery charger.
Input voltage range: 10.5V to 16VDC Input current: 2.7A max.
TARGET - The battery receiving charge. RATING: 12V AGM, GEL or STD lead-acid battery.
1. A fused battery connection cable with 1/4" / M6 ring terminals is provided. Fit the
battery connection cable to the TARGET battery as follows: RED ring terminal (attached to
the cable with in-line fuse) to POSITIVE (POS, P or +) battery post and BLACK ring terminal
to NEGATIVE (NEG, N or –) battery post. Make sure the connections are firm and secure.
Good contact is important.
2. A 15ft / 460cm power cable, with SAE two-pin connector on one side and bare cable on
the opposite side is provided to make a permanent connection to the vehicle's 12V system.
The bare / stripped wire wired to the open pin on the SAE connector is the NEGATIVE (NEG,
N or –) supply line and should be wired to the vehicle chassis. The bare / stripped wire
wired directly to the enclosed pin on the SAE connector is the POSITIVE (POS, P or +)
supply line and should be wired to the vehicle's 12V supply that is in turn connected to the
vehicle's POSITIVE (POS, P or +) battery post.
3. The battery charger's output SAE connector matches the polarity of the fused battery
connection cable described in point 1, with input connector matching the SAE connector of
the power cable described in point 2. In-line seals are provided to secure the connection
against dust and condensation.
First connect to TARGET battery and then to the SOURCE supply / battery. Always
disconnect in reverse sequence.
NOTE: The battery charger is protected against incorrect / inverse polarity connection.
SOURCE battery/supply reverse polarity connection - LED #1 (12V) will NOT light, indicating
the charger is not receiving the correct supply voltage.
TARGET battery reverse polarity connection - LED #2 blinks.
