In the last case, the water supply to the reactor has to be performed from the pressure side of a powerful
circulation pump or a canister filter. The drip counter to check the flow rate is installed at the water outlet, direct
in the aquarium. If the outlet is directed into the filter tank of an undercounter filter, the pressure of the
circulation pump is not that important. It is possible to regulate the flow rate either in the inlet or outlet pipe.
The adjustment in the inlet pipe is less exactly, especially at low flow rates and it takes a little while until you
can read the adjusted flow rate at the drip counter in the outlet pipe. The adjustment in the outlet pipe gives a
quick reply but is it not recommended to close the valve completely. False gas or undissolved CO
have to
2
escape there. If not, the overpressure in the reactor would cause the inlet water to flow back into the circulation
pump.
IMPORTANT! Never close both, inlet and outlet valve. CO
may cause overpressure.
2
The inflowing water quantity has to be adjusted in a way that approx. 12 - 30 l/h flow through the 6 mm pipe
out of the reactor. The adjustment and the quantity of CO
depends on the aquarium size and the calcium
2
requirements of the animals. The quantity of calcium can be adjusted via a bubble counter (not included).
5. Starting
The top of the Calcium reactor 5000 has a bayonet socket. Before setting up, check the O-ring and close the
maintenance valve at the bottom. As soon as the Calciumreactor KR 5000 is placed in the right position and
all connections are ready, the water flow can be started. Then, the reactor is filled up with water until water
comes out of the outlet. Now, the circulation pump can be started and the CO
can be switched on.
2
The quantity of CO
has to be adjusted the way that the pH value in the aquarium does not drop below pH 8.0.
2
Within the reactor itself, the pH value should drop to pH 6.5. It is possible to control the pH value in the reactor,
e. g. by the Aqua Medic pH computer. In the top are holes to put in a pH electrode. The electrode has to be
pressure resistant and needs to have a standard thread (PG 13,5). The back flow of the calciumbicarbonate
enriched water into either the aquarium or the filter tank should be directed to a well-flushed place in order to
mix it immediately with the aquarium water. This avoids instabilities of the pH value.
Because of the limited water flow through the Calciumreactor KR 5000, the pH lowering in the aquarium is
only minimal. It will be sufficient to check the pH value in the tank occasionally and to refrain from a continuous
adjustment.
6. Maintenance
The Aqua Medic Hydrocarbonate is consumed by the chemical reaction and has to be refilled from time to
time. Every 1 - 2 years, it should be replaced completely. Also the flow rate should be checked regularly. It has
to be re-adjusted with a drop counter. In case of polluted water, the adjustment valve in the water inflow has
to be cleaned from time to time.
