Operation
5.10 Behind–the–spokes
placement SWM (
Behind-the-spokes placement mode allows
to split balance weights that, according to the
measurement, would have to be fi tted between two
spokes, hence in a visible position. With the SWM
Mode instead, two equivalent weights are placed in
hidden position behind the two nearest spokes to
the initial application point (see example, Fig. 5-26).
After a run the measuring electronics calculates the
correct position of the weights behind the spokes
automatically and indicates the weight application
position.
The operating steps for the behind–the–spokes
placement mode (SWM) are described and illustrated
below.
5.10.1 Split Weight Mode (SWM)
It is possible to select it only after balancing a HWM
wheel with an unbalance ≥ 10 grams
in the right plane.
Note:
The "fine" read-out accuracy is not
available with this mode.
Select this mode to "hide" the right plane weight,
divided in two parts to be applied behind the two
nearest spokes to the calculated weight application
position. That way, the weights are not visible from
"outside".
• Perform a wheel run in HWM mode (Alu2P or
Alu3P).
• Apply the requested weight to the left plane.
• DO NOT apply the weight to the right side plane,
but select the "*." key.
The display is now as in (Fig. 5-28) (the weight
position and HWM indicators depend on the ALU mode
selected). The "*" indicator will be on and the SWM
indicator will blink.
Note:
If the SWM indicator does not blink, check
if the unit is in HWM mode.
• Select Enter to run SWMmode.
The * indicator goes off, a short beep will be heard and
the SWM indicator will light permanently.
The SWM mode is now active.
The display on the left shows "HSP" whilst the display
on the right indicates the number of spokes (Fig. 5-29).
The positions of the two weights divided, on the right
plane, are set by the unit based on the number of
spokes and the position of at least one of the spokes,
as entered by the user.
• Count the spokes of the rim and set the corresponding
number with the + and - keys.
