The Prototype
In the middle of the 50s, DB found
itself lacking powerful switching
locomotives. The development of the
three-axle switching locomotive with
jackshaft therefore became a priority.
All notable German locomotive
factories were represented in a
working group. It was possible to
start series production after a very
short trial period. The 12-cylinder
Maybach engine with a rated output
of 650 PS is located in the long front
nose of the series locomotive. The fuel
and main air tank are located in the
short nose section. Of the 941 built
units of the locomotive model series,
623 machines have a friction load of
48-49.5 Mp and are listed by DB in
the computerized numbering scheme
as model series 260.
Although DB AG has started to
withdraw the model series from
service, the charm of the locomotives
remains intact and the V 60 is very
popular still today with many private
railroad companies.
The Model
The PIKO model is very sturdy and
has a high haulage capacity in spite
of its attention to detail. It is suitable
for main and branch lines, inside and
outside, because special plastics make
this model weatherproof. However,
locomotive enthusiasts will love the
faithful replications of all original
details.
