Die Lokomotiven der BR 41 wurden ab 1937 von der DRG als
Schnellfahrgüterzugloks entwickelt. Sie sollten den Güterverkehr
beschleunigen. Gebaut wurden 366 Maschinen, die sich sehr schnell
als Universallokomotiven entpuppten und auch vor Schnellzügen im
Hügelland nicht halt machten.
Nach dem Krieg verblieb der größte Teil der 41er bei der neuen DB.
Leider hatten die Loks einen nicht alterungsbeständigen Kessel. Da
man aber auf die Maschinen noch lange nicht verzichten konnte,
wurden die Loks mit neuen Kesseln zu versehen. Die DB entwickelte
deshalb einen neuen Hochleistungskessel mit Verbrennungskammer
der ab 1957 in 103 Maschinen eingebaut wurde. Um die Leistungs-
fähigkeit und die Verfügbarkeit nochmals zu erhöhen, rüstete man
40 Maschinen zusätzlich auf Ölfeuerung um. Mit Einführung des EDV
Systems für Lokomotiven bekamen die ölgefeuerten 41er ab 1968
zur Unterscheidung zu den kohlegefeuerten die Baureihenbezeich-
nung 042.
Viele Loks der BR 042 konnten erhalten werden, einige sogar als
betriebsfähige Museumsloks.

Information about the Prototype
The class 41 locomotives were developed by the DRG starting in
1937 as fast freight locomotives. It was intended to accelerate frei-
ght service. A total of 366 units were built, and they quickly emerged
as general-purpose locomotives and were used to pull express trains
non-stop on hilly terrain.
After the war, the largest part of the class 41 locomotives remained
with the new DB. Unfortunately, these units had boilers that were
not resistant to aging. Since these locomotives could not be out
of service for very long, they were equipped with new boilers. The
DB developed a new high-performance boiler with a combustion
chamber that was installed on 103 units starting in 1957. Forty
locomotives were also equipped with oil firing in order to increase
the performance and availability even more. With the introduction
of the computer numbering system, the oil-fired class 41 units were
designated as the class 042 from 1968 to differentiate them from
the coal-fired units.
Many of the class 042 were able to be preserved, several of them as
operational museum locomotives.
