6. VOLTAGE REGULATOR

Electronic voltage regulator HVR-11 comprises state-of-the-art electronic
components able to provide, within a small size and without compromise, all
the functions required to control any type of alternator.
The main features are:
-
Voltage static error within ±1%.
-
Wide stability control regulation to adapt to every type of drive motor and
every type of alternator.
-
Adjustable protection against low speed operation of the drive motor.
-
Adjustable protection against over-exciting that protects the alternator
from dangerous load conditions.
-
Incorporated EMI filter to reduce emitted radio-interference to the
minimum.
HVR-11 technical features
-
Supply voltage inlet:
a) 110 VAC ± 15%.
b) 220 VAC -25%/+15%.
-
Max. field current: 10 Adc.
-
Single-phase inlet of reference voltage: 90 VAC to 300 VAC.
-
Alternator outlet voltage setting by multi-turn trimmer.
-
Stability control setting by multi-turn trimmer.
-
Low frequency protection trip threshold setting by multi-turn trimmer.
-
Over-excitation protection trip threshold setting by multi-turn trimmer.
-
Remote potentiometer inlet.
-
Operation at 50Hz or 60Hz.
To prevent injuries to persons or damage to equipment,
the voltage regulator must only be repaired by qualified
personnel.
Operation at 60 Hz
When operating at 60 Hz, connect terminals 6 and 7 of regulator HVR-11 by
a bridge.
Voltage regulation
The voltage regulator is set when tested to obtain 400 VAC line-to-line voltage at
50 Hz (or 480 V at 60 Hz) at the generator outlet with 115 VAC reference voltage
at 50 Hz (or 138 V at 60 Hz)
between terminals 5 and 6 of the HVR-11 regulator, or 230 VAC at 50 Hz (or 240
V at 60 Hz) with 115 VAC reference voltage at 50 Hz
(or 120 V at 60 Hz) between terminals 5 and 6 of regulator HVR-11 (CPS).
Stability control
Stability control acts on the dynamic response of the system, thereby avoiding
oscillations in the value of the output voltage The regulator is preset in the
factory in order to provide the best performance in the majority of applications.
In special applications, the ST trimmer can be used to change the response of
the regulator. The response time is increased by turning the trimmer clockwise.
Protection against low speed operation
Protection against low speed operation is preset in the factory to decrease the
output voltage of the generator when the frequency drops below 47 Hz. Turn
the Hz trimmer clockwise to decrease the frequency threshold of this protection
- 14 -
If the regulator is set for operation at 60 Hz (terminals 6 and 7 of regulator
HVR-11 connected by a bridge), the trip frequency of the protection is 57 Hz.
Overload protection
Overload protection is designed to protect the inductor system of the alternator
from excessive overload conditions or strongly inductive loads.
The protection limits the voltage at the ends of the exciter stator. The value to
which the exciter stator supply voltage is limited is set in the factory and can
be increased by turning the OL trimmer clockwise.
Operation test of the disassembled regulator
Proceed as described below to check that the regulator functions properly:
a) Make the connection as indicated in the diagram of figure 11.
b) Supply the regulator with 220 VAC alternating voltage. The light bulb should
not switch on.
c) Slowly turn the VG trimmer clockwise. At a certain point, the light bulb will
begin to switch on and its brightness will increase as the trimmer is turned.
d) Having reached its maximum degree of brightness the light bulb must
switch off completely and then partially switch on again after a few
seconds.
If everything proceeds as described above, it means that the regulator func-
tions properly.
