1. SAFETY MEASURES

Before using the genset, it is mandatory to read the "Opera-
tion and maintenance" manual of the genset and alterna-
tor and to comply with the following recommendations.
⇒ Safe, efficient operation can only be achieved if the machines
are used correctly, as provided for by the relevant "Operation and
maintenance" manuals and by the safety regulations.
⇒ An electric shock can cause serious damage and even death.
⇒ It is forbidden to remove the cover from the terminal box and
alternator protection grids before the alternator has come to a
complete stop and before deactivating the starting system of the
genset.
⇒ The genset must only be serviced by competent and qualified
personnel.
⇒ Do not wear loose clothing when working near the genset.
Personnel tasked with handling the genset must always wear protective gloves
and safety footwear. The operators must also wear a hard hat if the generator
or the entire unit must be lifted from the ground.
The person tasked with installing the genset is responsible
for adopting all the necessary measures to ensure that the
entire plant complies with the local safety regulations
in force (earthing, protections against contact, protec-
tions against explosions and fire outbreaks, emergency
stop, etc...).
Safety notices
The meanings of the safety notices used in this manual are described
below:
IMPORTANT! Refers to dangerous or risky operations that
may cause damage to the product.
CAUTION! Refers to dangerous or risky operations that
may cause damage to the product and injuries to persons.
WARNING! Refers to dangerous or risky operations that
may cause serious injuries or even death.
DANGER! Refers to an immediate risk that may cause
serious injuries or death.

2. ALTERNATOR DESCRIPTION

The LINZ ELECTRIC COMPATTO series includes three-phase (CPT) and single-
phase (CPS) 4-pole brushless alternators with exciter and electronic regulation.
They are manufactured in compliance with EN 60034-1, EN 60204-1, EN61000-
6-2, EN61000-6-4, EN 55014-1, EN 55011 specifications and with Directives
2014/35/EU, 2014/30/EU.
Ventilation: Axial, with air inlet from non-drive end side.
Protection: Standard IP 23.
Direction of rotation: Both directions are allowed.
Electrical features: Insulation components are made with class H material
in both stator and rotor.
Windings are tropicalized and protected by an additional phenolic coating
particularly suitable for marine environments.
Power ratings: The ratings refer to the following conditions: ambient tempera-
ture up to 40°C, altitude up to 1000 m. a.s.l., continuous duty at cos φ = 0.8.
Overloads: 10% overload for 1 hour every 6 hours is
normally accepted.
Operation in particular conditions:
4% derating per 500 m altitude increase must be applied if the alternator must
be used at more than 1000 m a.s.l.
Apply 4% derating per 5°C temperature increase when the ambient temperature
exceeds 40°C.

Mechanical features:

The casing is made of steel (with the exception of size L in aluminum), the DE
and NDE covers are in aluminum with cast iron bearing seat while the shaft is
in high-tensile steel.
The rotor is particularly sturdy since it must withstand the runaway speed of
the drive motors. It is equipped with a damping cage which allows satisfac-
tory operation even with single-phase, distorted loads. Bearings have lifelong
lubrication.

3. INSTALLATION AND START-UP

The following control and start-up operations must only
be performed by qualified personnel.
⇒ The alternator must be installed in a well ventilated room to prevent the
temperature from exceeding the values required by the regulations.
⇒ Particular attention must be paid to ensuring that the air inlets and outlets
are never obstructed and that the position chosen for the alternator avoids
direct suction of warm air from the outlet of the alternator itself and/or
from the drive motor.
⇒ Before starting up the alternator it is advisable to check visually and in
the manual mode that all terminals in all the terminal boards are properly
clamped and that there is nothing to prevent the rotor from turning.
If the alternator has not been used for a long time test the insulation
resistance to earth of the windings, bearing in mind that every single part
checked must be isolated from the others.
Before beginning to test the insulation resistance to
earth of the windings using a megger or some other
high voltage instrument, the electronic regulator must
be completely disconnected from the alternator since
the high voltage from the instrument could damage the
internal components of the regulator itself.
Windings with ≥ 1MΩ resistance to earth at 500VD.C. Are normally
considered to be sufficiently insulated.
If the value measured is lower, the insulation will have to be restored
by drying the winding (e.g. In an oven at 60-80°C or by making current
of a suitable value obtained from an auxiliary source circulate through
the winding).
Make sure that the metal parts of the alternator and the exposed conductive
parts of the entire set are connected to the earthing circuit and that this
latter is compliant with the relevant legal requirements.
