Operating Instructions CORREX

Safety warnings concerning defective electrical tubular heating elements
In the event of a defect in the electrical tubular heating element, the M8
threaded bolt of the impressed-current anode and the connecting cable
between anode and potentiostat may carry mains voltage. If these parts are
touched, the risk of a fatal electric shock cannot be excluded. For reasons of
safety, the electrical tubular heating element must therefore be disconnected
from the power supply before undertaking any work on the impressed-current
anode system.

and a titanium anode connected with one another by means of a connecting
cable. The impressed current is supplied by the interrupter potentiostat
and the protective current is fed into the tank via the titanium anode.
The electrochemical reactions taking place at the titanium anode (positive
pole) and at the spots and crevices in the enamel of the storage tank in
contact with the water acting as the cathode (negative pole) result in a trans-
port of charges (electrons) towards the defective spots. The electrochemical
surface potential in the area of the spots and crevices in contact with the
water is thus lowered to such an extent that the corrosion speed in the steel
wall of the tank becomes virtually zero. Depending on water quality,
calcareous deposits may build up in addition on the defective enamel spots.
The system works as a so-called interrupter potentiostat, i.e. the protective
current flow through the titanium anode is interrupted periodically in short
intervals. During these interruptions, the potential existing between the
titanium anode and the inner wall of the hot-water storage tank is measured
and transmitted as actual voltage to the potentiostat where the actual voltage
is compared to the reference voltage defined by the potentiostat.
The protective current supplied is then adjusted in such a way that the actual
tank potential corresponds to the reference potential.
