Test with injector
adapter
Prior to starting compression test, consult
manufacturer's speciications and/or
appropriate service manual to determine
whether test should be performed while
cranking or running. Familiarize with proper
speciications and any unique testing
procedures, and follow recommended
procedures for removing and installing
injectors.
1 Put vehicle in neutral or park, and set
parking brake.
2 Thoroughly clean area around each
injector to eliminate any chance of dirt or
contamination entering engine.
3 Run engine to warm it to normal
operating temperature.
4 If test is to be performed while cranking,
ensure battery has full charge and/or
connect charger or auxiliary battery.
5 Follow manufacturer's recommended
procedure for disabling fuel supply and
removing injector(s).
6 Select appropriate injector adapter and
install into cylinder 1.
7 Connect tester to injector adapter
installed in cylinder 1.
8 While watching gauge, crank or run
engine as speciied by manufacturer. If
cranking, count compression strokes by
listening adjacent cylinders. Watch for
pressure to peak around 6 to 10 strokes,
then stop cranking. If running engine,
note length of running time until
maximum pressure is reached.
9 Record cylinder number and peak
compression value.
10 Press pressure relief button on side of
tester to release pressure.
11 Disconnect gauge and remove injector
adapter. If required, reinstall injector
before proceeding.
12 Install injector adapter in cylinder 2, and
reconnect tester.
13 Repeat compression test on cylinder 2
and all remaining cylinders. Be sure to
crank engine same number of strokes
and to record peak compression value
for each cylinder.
14 After completing test on all cylinders,
remove tester and adapter, and
reinstall injector(s).
15 Follow manufacturers instructions for
analyzing results.
