1. GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

• This device complies with IEC 61010-1, CAT II 1000V and CAT III 600V
overvoltage standards.
• To get the best service from this device, carefully read this user manual and
observe the detailed safety precautions.
• International symbols used on the device and in this manual are explained
in section 1.2.
Caution, risk of
electric shock
• The user must have read and understood these safety instructions.
• Failure to heed these warnings may result in serious or fatal personal injury
and/or property damage.
• Do not use or modify this device for any purpose other than for which it was
designed.
• Do not make any technical changes or modifications to the device or defeat
any safety functions.
• Use only original accessories and spare parts.
• The manufacturer disclaims liability for any damage or malfunction resulting
from failure to observe these operating and maintenance instructions.
• The illustrations and pictures may differ from the actual device, but the
functions and required procedures remain the same.

1.1 Safety precautions

1.1.1 Preliminary remark

• Due to the increasing probability of high transient overvoltage in modern
power systems, electrical test equipment must meet more stringent safety
standards. Transients in electrical systems (power grid, feeders or branch
circuits) can trigger a sequence of incidents that may result in serious
personal injury. Safety must be built into test equipment to protect users
against transients.

Examples
CAT I
Electronic
• Protected electronic equipment.
equipment
• Equipment connected to (source) circuits in which measures
are tak en to limit transient overvoltage to an appropriately
low level.
• Any high-voltage, low-energy source derived from a
transformer with high winding resistance, such as the high-
voltage section of a photocopier.
CAT II
Single-phase
• Appliances, portable tools, and other similar household loads.
loads connected to
• Outlets and long branch circuits.
power outlets
• Outlets at more than 10 metres (30 feet) from a CAT III source.
• Outlets at more than 20 metres (60 feet) from a CAT IV source.
CAT III
Three-phase
• Equipment in fixed installations, such as switchgear or
distribution,
polyphase motors.
including single-
• Buses and feeders in industrial plants.
phase commercial
• Feeders and short branch circuits, distribution panel devices.
lighting
• Lighting systems in larger buildings.
• Appliance outlets with short connections to service entrance.
CAT IV
Three-phase utility
• Refers to the "origin of installation"; i.e. where low-voltage
connection, all
connection is made to utility power.
outdoor conductors
• Electricity meters, primary overcurrent protection equipment.
• Outside and service entrance, service drop from pole to
building, run between meter and panel.
• Overhead line to detached building, underground line to well
pump.
• When using this device, the user must observe all normal safety rules
concerning:
– Protection against electrical shock.
– Protection of the device against misuse.
• For your own safety, only use the test probes supplied with the device.
Before use, check that they are in good condition.
