The Original
Experts consider this to be one of the most elegantly designed German steam locomotives of its time, and it could also boast
the best technical characteristics. And yet this locomotive never became a success. The career of the BR 23 is closely linked
with that of the passenger steam locomotive BR 38.10 - the Prussian P 8 - and the freight steam locomotive BR 50.
As the predecessor to the BR 23, the BR 38.10 acted as the standard for the new locomotive. The boiler, tank, driver's cab and
other components on the BR 23 were identical to those on the BR 50.
In addition to the boiler, the cast-iron principle of German standard locomotive designs was also revised with regard to the
chassis. The chassis with the axle sequence 1'C1' was completely redesigned so that BR 50 boilers were interchangeable with
BR 23 boilers. The front wheelset was designed as a Krauss-Helmholtz bogie and the coupling axes were positioned further
forward to create space for the wider boiler firebox, which was supported at the rear by an Adams axle. With this symmetrical
chassis, the design of the BR 23 was extremely well-balanced, and one would be justified in designating it the beauty queen
of German standard locomotives.
