4.4 Commissioning Stuffing Boxes
First Start‐up of Stuffing Box Packing
During assembly the screws of the stuffing box have been tightened only slightly to be able to check the
ease of pump rotation prior to start‐up
∙
Before starting-up the pump, tighten the stuffing box nut in several steps until reaching the stuffing box
torque (see pump data sheet, Chapter 7). Then, tighten the counternut.

Start up the pump.

After starting the pump, check and if necessary adjust the pretension of the stuffing box fairly fre­
quently (two or three times during the first few hours of operation). After the stuffing‐box seal has sta­
bilized, continuous operation can be adequately monitored at weekly intervals. Observe the safety in­
structions in Chapter 1.9.

For packings with spring pre-load, take note of the installation dimensions and references to the pump
drawing, as necessary.
Resuming Operation of the Stuffing Box Packing after a Pump Standstill

In case of extended downtimes, it is recommended to replace all packing rings with new ones in order
to prevent too bad a leakage of the packing during operation.
∙
Before installing the new packing rings, it must be ensured that the installation location including drive
shaft and the stuffing box are free from residues and other contamination, i.e. the entire area must be
100% clean.
4.5 Start‐up of the Pump
Start-up the pump at low speed and low pressure until the medium is delivered continuously.
4.6 Restarting after Pump Standstill if Pumping Polymer
To prevent the hardening of the pumped medium in the grease gaps of the pump, the temperature of the
pump must be reduced after standstills of more than 5 hours (time depends on pumping medium used).
Failure to do so bears the risk of damage to the sliding points (bearing points) when restarting the pump
as the lubricity of the pumped medium will no longer be sufficient.
