SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The 3M Jupiter is a battery powered and belt-mounted Powered Air Turbo
which when used in conjunction with one of the approved headtops forms
a Powered Filtering Device. The Jupiter system offers a choice of 4 hour,
8 hour or Intrinsically Safe (I.S.) battery packs, a range of filter options and
incorporates an electronic control unit which provides an audible and
visual warning of low battery and/or low airflow into the headtop.
APPROVALS
These products are type approved and audited annually by BSI, Kitemark
Court, Davy Avenue, Knowlhill, Milton Keynes MK5 8PP, UK, Notified
Body No. 0086. These products are CE Marked to the requirements of
either Community Directive 89/686/EEC or European Regulation (EU)
2016/425. The applicable specific legislation met by the products can be
determined by reviewing the Certificate and Declaration of Conformity
available at the following website www.3m.com/Respiratory/certs and
www.3m.com/Welding/certs
These products are also CE marked to the European EMC Directive
2014/30/EU The Jupiter Powered Air Turbo (085-00-10P), when fitted with
the I.S. Battery Pack and I.S. Pouch (085-12-00P), has been approved for
use in Potentially Explosive atmospheres.
^ WARNINGS AND LIMITATIONS
Proper selection, training, use and appropriate maintenance are
essential in order for the product to help protect the wearer from
certain airborne contaminants. Failure to follow all instructions on
the use of these respiratory protection products and/or failure to
properly wear the complete product during all periods of exposure
may adversely affect the wearer's health, lead to severe or life
threatening illness or permanent disability.
If you have any doubts about the suitability of the product to your job
situation, it is recommended that you consult an occupational hygienist, or
call 3M Personal Safety Technical Affairs at your local 3M office. See back
of this booklet for addresses and telephone numbers.
Use this respirator system strictly in accordance with all instructions:
• contained in this booklet
• accompanying other components of the system (e.g. 3M Jupiter
reference leaflet, Headtop and Filter user instructions).
Do not use in concentrations of contaminants above those given in the
Headtop user instructions.
Do not use for respiratory protection against unknown atmospheric
contaminants or when concentrations of contaminants are unknown or
immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH).
Do not use in atmospheres containing less than 19.5% oxygen. (3M
definition. Individual countries may apply their own limits on oxygen
deficiency. Seek advice if in doubt).
Only use with Headtops and Spares/Accessories listed in the reference
leaflet and within the usage conditions given in the Technical
Specification.
Only for use by trained, competent personnel.
Leave the contaminated area immediately if:
a) Any part of the system becomes damaged.
b) Airflow into the headtop decreases or stops.
c) Breathing becomes difficult.
d) Dizziness or other distress occurs.
e) You smell or taste contaminants or irritation occurs.
Never modify or alter this product. Replace parts only with original 3M
spare parts.
When using standard 4 and 8 hour batteries - Do not use in potentially
flammable or explosive atmospheres.
When using I.S. Battery and I.S. Pouch and an appropriate Headtop
(Please see Jupiter Reference Leaflet), use of the Jupiter Powered Air
Turbo is permitted in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres (Gas) Zones 1
and 2 and (Dust) Zones 21 and 22.
Do not use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres Zone 0 and Zone 20.
Do not use for mining applications.
Materials which may come into contact with the wearer's skin are not
known to cause allergic reactions to the majority of individuals.
These products do not contain components made from natural rubber
latex.
Safe Use of Battery Chargers
^ To reduce exposure to hazardous voltage:
- Do not use the chargers outdoors or in wet environments.
- Do not attempt to service the chargers. There are no user-serviceable
parts inside.
- Inspect the chargers and power cords before use. Replace if any parts
are damaged.
- Do not substitute, modify or add parts to the chargers.
- Only charge 3M Jupiter NiMH Batteries with the CHG-02 and CHG-04
chargers.
Safe Use of Rechargeable NiMH Batteries
To reduce risk of fire and explosion associated with the NiMH batteries:
- Do not short circuit the battery. Discharge only by running in the
Powered Air Turbo.
EQUIPMENT MARKING
For Headtop marking please see appropriate Headtop user instructions.
For Filter marking please see Filter user instruction. The Jupiter Powered
Air Turbo is marked to EN12941. The Jupiter Powered Air Turbo is
marked with a date of manufacture (month/year). The Jupiter Powered Air
Turbo is marked IP53 (IP63 when fitted with I.S. Pouch). The Jupiter I.S.
Pouch is marked with EN60079-0, EN60079-11 Ex ib II B T3
Gb,EN61241-1, Ex tb IIIC T55°C Db, II 2 GD and SIRA Ex09Y2202X. The
Jupiter I.S. Battery is marked to EN12941 and with EN60079-0,
EN60079-11 Ex ib II B T3 Gb, EN61241-1, Ex tb IIIC T55°C Db, II 2 GD
and SIRA Ex09Y2202X. The standard 4 and 8 hour batteries are marked
to EN12941.
PREPARATION FOR USE
Check apparatus is complete, undamaged and correctly assembled. Any
damaged or defective parts must be replaced with original 3M spare parts
before use. Undertake pre-use checks on headtop assembly as outlined
in the appropriate user instruction. For pre-use checks on I.S. pouch see
085-11-00P/085-12-00P user instructions. Fit the belt to the Powered Air
Turbo as outlined in the BLT-12 user instruction. Select an approved
battery (Please see Jupiter reference leaflet for list of approved 3M
batteries). Charge as shown in Fig. 1 and fit as shown in Fig. 2. For use in
Potentially Explosive Atmospheres, I.S. Battery Pack and I.S. pouch must
be fitted. For fitting of the pouch see 085-11-00P/085-12-00P user
instructions.
Battery Charging
The battery should be charged prior to first use or if unused for more than
5 days.
For charging of the 4 hour, 8 hour and I.S .batteries, please see reference
leaflet.
NOTE: The battery must be charged in a safe area.
Calibration
Calibrate the Powered Air Turbo before first use and at least monthly
thereafter. See Fig. 3.

Filters
Select approved filters (please see Jupiter reference leaflet for list of 3M
approved filters). Fit optional pre-filters if required (Fig. 4) and then fit
filters as shown in Fig. 5.
Airflow Check
Before use, undertake airflow check using the airflow indicator tube (white
ball). See Fig. 6. To check for correct functioning of audible warning
device, see Fig. 7.
