A child's motor skills develop through four stages: crawling, sitting,
walking and running. It is only at the age of 3–4 years that a child
is able to learn to ride a bicycle or tricycle. Children's cars make it
possible to learn independent mobility in the phase between com-
pletion of the attainment of walking skills and the development of
sufficient motor coordination in the arms and legs for performing
peddling movements. In this particular case, care has been taken
in the special design of the Carrera push car, to maintain a narrow
backrest, thus minimising external rotation in the hip joint. This
means, in turn, that the knee joint is under pressure only when bent.
In this design, the hip joint is brought further into the flexion and
extension positions, and the knee joint, too, is held in the correct
axial position, resulting in movements that constitute the ideal
preparation for bicycle and tricycle riding. The better axial move-
ments in the hip and knee joints result in better coordination and
earlier learning of bicycle and tricycle riding; similarly, these devices
also promote the correct straight-ahead axial orientation of the
joints.
