Warning! During coffee brewing, do not remove
the portafilter by manually turning it clockwise.
Danger of burns.
• During this operation the machine ready light may flash.
This should be considered a standard operation.
• Before use, make sure the "hot water/steam" knob
is closed and the water tank of the machine is filled
sufficiently.
• If the machine is off, switch it on by means of the
power button.
• During the warming phase, the machine ready light
flashes. Wait until it is permanently on (Fig. 8). The
machine is now ready for coffee brewing.
Warning! By pressing the brew button during
the warming phase, hot water may flow out of
the brew unit: Danger of burns.
5.1 using "illy" Coffee Pods
the machine has been designed and
manufactured to get the best performance
with "illy" pods.
• (Fig.9) - Insert the pod filter into the ESE pod
portafilter.
• (Fig.11) - Insert the ESE pod portafilter into the brew
unit from the bottom.
• (Fig.12) - Turn the portafilter from left to right until it
locks into place.
• (Fig.21) - Preheat the portafilter by pressing the brew
button. Water will start to flow out of the portafilter (this
operation is only necessary before the first coffee is
brewed).
• When a few ounces of water have flowed out, press
the brew button again to stop dispensing water.
• Remove the portafilter by turning it towards the left,
then drain any water remaining in the portafilter.
• (Fig.14) - Press the "illy" button. The light turns on and
the machine warms up to the right temperature.
• (Fig.10) - Insert a single shot pod into the portafilter;
make sure the paper of the pod does not stick out of
the portafilter.
• Check that the temperature ready light is permanently
on.
• (Fig.11) - Insert the portafilter into the brew unit from
the bottom.
• (Fig.12) - Turn the portafilter from left to right until it
locks into place.

• (Fig.13) - Take 1 preheated cup and place it under
the portafilter. Check that it is correctly placed under
the coffee brewing spout.
• (Fig.15) - Press the coffee brew button.
• When the desired quantity of coffee has been reached,
press the coffee brew button again to stop brewing,
and remove the cup of coffee.
• Wait a few seconds after brewing, then remove the
portafilter and dispose of the used pod.
Note for cleaning: Keep the filter of the
portafilter clean by removing it from the
portafilter. Then wash it with drinking water (see
section 9).
5.2 using Ground Coffee
For brewing pre-ground coffee, only use the ground
coffee portafilter, indicated on page 19.
• (Fig.16) - Insert the ground coffee filter into the
portafilter.
• (Fig.18) - Insert the portafilter into the brew unit from
the bottom.
• (Fig.19) - Turn the portafilter from left to right until it
locks into place.
• Release the grip from the portafilter. The handle is
automatically slightly turned towards the left. This
movement ensures the portafilter is pressurized for
optimal functionality.
• (Fig.21) - Preheat the portafilter by pressing the brew
button. Water will start to flow out of the portafilter (this
operation is only necessary before the first coffee is
brewed).
• When a few ounces of water have flowed out, press
the brew button again to stop dispensing water.
• (Fig.22) - Remove the portafilter from the machine,
by turning it from right to left, and drain any water
remaining in the portafilter.
• With the ground coffee portafilter, there is no need to
change the filter to make one or two coffees.
• (Fig.17) -With the measuring scoop provided, add 1
or 2 scoops of ground coffee to the filter for one or
two coffees, respectively. Clean any coffee residues
from the edge of the portafilter.
• (Fig.18) - Insert the portafilter into the brew unit from
the bottom.
• (Fig.19) - Turn the portafilter from left to right until it
locks into place.
• (Fig.20) - Take 1 or 2 preheated cups and place them
under the portafilter. Check that they are correctly
placed under the coffee dispensing spouts.
• (Fig.21) - Press the coffee brew button.
