3.2.6
Scrapping
3.2.6.1
Within the European Union
The production, handling and scrapping of batteries are regulated by Directive 2006/66/EC
of the European Parliament and Council of 6 September 2006 on batteries and
accumulators and battery waste, and Directive 91/157/EEC.
For detailed information on waste treatment, view the site of the European Portable Battery
Association (EPBA) epbaeurope.net/legislation.
3.2.6.2
In the United States
Lithium-ion batteries are classified by the federal government as non-dangerous waste and
can therefore be safely disposed of via the normal municipal waste system. However,
these batteries contain recyclable materials and can therefore be recycled according to the
battery recycling programme of the RBRC (Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation).
For more information, view the site of the RBRC call2recycle.org.
