Preparing the surfaces to be bonded
3.1 General
An oxide-free, easily wetted surface is a prerequisite for good adhesion. The
state of the measurement object will determine which of the following steps
are necessary.
The installation quality basically depends on the preparation of the measuring
point. The aim is to create a surface that is even and not too coarse, so that it
can be easily wetted.
3.2 Coarse cleaning
Remove all rust, scale, paint coatings and other impurities from a generous
area around the measuring point.
3.3 Leveling
Level any pock marks, scratches, bulges and other irregularities by grinding,
filing or by other appropriates means.
3.4 Degreasing
The choice of cleaning agent will depend on the type of impurity and the sen-
sitivity of the material used in the workpiece being measured. The cleaning
agent RMS1 (HBM order no.: 1-RMS1), a mixture of acetone and isopropanol,
is recommended for most installations. Powerful grease dissolvers, such as
methyl ethyl ketone or acetone, are also commonly used. Toluene is suitable
for removing wax-like substances.
When larger areas are contaminated, it is advisable to first clean them with
water and an abrasive agent.
Wash over the surface to be cleaned with a cleaning soaked in solvent. First,
clean a larger area around the measuring point, then clean ever smaller
areas, so that dirt and impurities are not rubbed into the measuring point from
the edges.
