3 System Components
3.1 Cryopilot A
The Cryopilot A is a recirculating chiller that controls the temperature of a
heat transfer fluid (HTF) to a temperature setpoint.
A cascade refrigeration system cools the HTF when its actual temperature is
above the temperature setpoint. The main components of the refrigeration
system are a high temperature compressor, a low temperature compressor,
a condenser, an automated expansion valve and an evaporator. The
refrigerants used in the high and low stages are R23 and R507, respectively.
The refrigerant condenser is air-cooled.
A pair of electrical resistance heaters heats the HTF when its actual tempe-
rature is below the temperature setpoint. A 1500 W large heater is used for
large temperature changes and a 100 W fine heater is used for small tempe-
rature changes. This dual heater arrangement provides for precise control of
HTF supply temperature.
A variable speed pump circulates the HTF through the evaporator, the hea-
ters and the external application. For Cryowedge applications, the HTF
flows through the jacket and the core heat exchanger area. For S³ Module
applications, the HTF flows through the walls adjacent to the Celsius
clamps. An expansion reservoir simplifies priming the system and allows for
HTF expansion and contraction.
The Cryopilot A is microprocessor controlled. The controller user interface
has several pushbuttons, a rotary encoder, an LCD display with touch
screen, and a system diagram with status LEDs.
