1.2. Purpose of use
The REMS Macho is an acetylene torch which can be used for brazing and
soft soldering, heating, annealing, burning off, melting, thawing, shrinking
and similar thermal processes.
1.3. Permitted gas
1.4. Operating gas pressure
1.5. Gas consumption
1.6. Output
1.7. Flame temperature
1.8. Noise data
Workplace related noise level

2. Preparations for Use

2.1. Gas connection
Secure the gas cylinder against falling over. Use an adjustable pressure regu-
lator (0 to 2.5 bar) and flashback arrester. Connect an approved gas h oseline
for acetylene to the gas cylinder respectively flashback a rrester and threaded
socket (3) of the acetylene torch.
WARNING
BSPP ⅜" left-hand threads in each case. Set the gas pressure to 1bar. Check
the system for leaks.
3. Operation
CAUTION
Wear protective glasses!
3.1. Soldering torch acetylene
Open the gas cylinder valve; if necessary set the gas pressure as des cribed
under 1. The integral valve in the torch is opened by operating the trigger (1).
Simultaneously, the spark generator (piezo igniter) projects a spark into the
torch pipe, igniting the gas. On ignition, a loud report is produced; this has no
effect on the functioning of the apparatus. Following a new connection or
reconnection to a gas cylinder, it may be necessary to operate the trigger
repeatedly until the air has been expelled from the hoseline.
When the trigger is released, the valve in the torch closes, cutting off the gas
supply, and the flame goes out.
If the locking button (2) is pressed when the trigger is operated, the trigger will
stay on and the torch will continue to remain lit. When the trigger is operated
again, the locking button will be released. When the trigger itself is then released,
the flame will go out.
For brazing operations, the tips of the circular flame should touch the work-
piece. For soft soldering operations, the tips of the flames can be held at a
distance of 10 – 30 mm from the workpiece, depending on the size of the pipe.
NOTICE
Do not reduce the gas pressure and always press the trigger (1) till the very
end, otherwise, due to a reduced flame, the torch pipe and spark generator
may be damaged.
CAUTION
When the torch is no longer required, close the gas cylinder valve and allow
the residual gas in the hoseline and torch to burn off.
3.2. Soldering material
For brazing operations, use REMS Lot P 6. Copper pipes and fittings must
not be treated with flux but in their bare metal state. For other materials, such
as brass, it may be necessary to use flux.
For soft soldering operations, use REMS Lot Cu 3. Copper pipes and fittings
must be treated as bare metal. To prepare the soldered area, apply REMS
Paste Cu 3 to the pipe section. This paste contains soldering powder and flux.
The advantage of the paste lies in the fact that the tempera ture required for
soldering can be identified by a change of colour in the h eated paste, thus
ensuring that the soldered joint is properly fi lled. In any case, however, REMS
Lot Cu 3 must be inserted afterwards. REMS Lot Cu3 and REMS Paste Cu 3
have been specially developed for drinking water pipes and comply with the
specifications laid down by the German Federation of Gas and Sanitary Engi-
neers (GW 2 and GW 7) and the relevant DIN standards.
4. Maintenance
Maintenance and repair operations on the torch must not be carried out other
than by qualified personnel or REMS after sales service centres. No repairs or
modifications to the torch are permitted by unauthorised persons.
Before undertaking any maintenance or repair operations, close the valve on
the gas cylinder and allow any residual gas in the hose and torch to burn off.
To replace the torch nozzle, torch pipe or spark generator, unscrew the five
screws from the housing and remove the upper part of the housing. Now remove
the torch from the lower part of the housing. Pull off the torch pipe and nozzle
retainer. Replace the nozzle retainer with torch nozzle, torch pipe or spark
generator.
5. Action in Case of Trouble
5.1. Fault: Torch will not ignite or produces weak flame.
Acetylene
1 bar (14 psi)
360 l/h
5.2. Fault: Torch will not ignite automatically (but can be lit with e.g. a match).
20 000 kJ/h (19 000 BTU)
2500°C (4500°F)

6. Manufacturer's Warranty

84 dB (A)

The warranty period shall be 12 months from delivery of the new product to the
first user. The date of delivery shall be documented by the submission of the
original purchase documents, which must include the date of purchase and the
designation of the product. All functional defects occurring within the warranty
period, which are clearly the consequence of defects in production or materials,
will be remedied free of charge. The remedy of defects shall not extend or
renew the warranty period for the product. Damage attributable to natural wear
and tear, incorrect treatment or misuse, failure to observe the operational
instructions, unsuitable operating materials, excessive demand, use for unau-
thorized purposes, interventions by the customer or a third party or other
reasons, for which REMS is not responsible, shall be excluded from the warranty
Services under the warranty may only be provided by customer service stations
authorized for this purpose by REMS. Complaints will only be accepted if the
product is returned to a customer service station authorized by REMS without
prior interference in an unassembled condition. Replaced products and parts
shall become the property of REMS.
The user shall be responsible for the cost of shipping and returning the product.
The legal rights of the user, in particular the right to make claims against the
seller under the warranty terms, shall not be affected. This manufacturer's
warranty only applies for new products which are purchased in the European
Union, in Norway or in Switzerland.
