Two Common and Dangerous 230 Volt Installation Errors
Do not use two single pole (i.e. 5 Volt) circuit breakers to run your 230 Volt pump.
Here's Why:
A: With the breakers connected to adjacent terminals, one breaker
connects to each bus bar. If one breaker trips, that wire will have no
voltage on it and the motor will stop.
However, the other wire and the motor will still have voltage and
can shock you if you touch them.

Typical 115 Volt Connection via a Single Pole Breaker (which
contacts one bus bar). Ground (green wire) and White (neutral wire)
both connect to the neutral bar.
Black wire is the hot side and white wire is the neutral side of the
5 volt circuit.
B: With the breakers connected with one space between them, they
contact the same bus bar. With no voltage differential between the
lines, the motor won't run.
A voltage check from either breaker to the neutral bar or wire will
show 5 volts – correct but misleading.
A voltage check from one breaker to the other will show 0 (zero)
volts - dangerous and misleading, because although there is no
voltage between breakers, each breaker is still connected to its own
live 5 volt circuit.
