ATEX-/UKEX device intended for use in hazardous area
If the product is intended for use in a potentially explosive atmosphere (gas/air or gas/dust mixture), observe the special
documentation (
information in the
ATEX zone, degree of protection, temperature class) is indicated on the product (in the declaration of conformity and usually
also on the nameplate).
NOTE
As a rule, country-specific requirements for the operator also apply when a product is used in a potentially explosive
atmosphere (e.g. Directive 1999/92/EC for the EU).
Safety in potentially hazardous atmospheres
SIMATIC systems are suitable for use in zones with occasional presence of hazardous gas atmospheres (equipment group II,
Cat. 3, gases, vapors, mists). You can find information, restrictions and special conditions in the respective system manuals.
To avoid damage, determine a suitable installation location and select suitable products. It is mandatory to define the
following points before planning your automation system:

•
• Relevant requirements for the products
WARNING
Explosion hazard
If work in areas with potentially hazardous atmospheres is not carried out correctly, an explosion may occur. Explosions can
lead to serious personal injury or damage to the plant.
Only suitably qualified specialists are allowed to plan and perform activities in areas with potentially hazardous atmospheres.
In hazardous areas, always de-energize the SIMATIC system before starting activities.
WARNING
Pulling or plugging a module is prohibited in the hazardous area.
When you pull or plug a module or plug-in connector during operation, there is a risk of sparking. Sparks can cause an
explosion in the hazardous area; death or serious physical injury as well as damage to property can result.
Do not pull or plug the module or the plug-in connectors until one of the following two conditions is met: The area is no
longer hazardous or the device and its plug-in connectors are de-energized.
Cleaning
If you need to clean the product, use dry ESD cleaning cloths (observing the protective measures for ESD).
Requirement: All supply voltages present on the device are switched off. Observe the five safety rules for working in and on
electrical installations.
