biphasic pulses. The digital TENS/EMS only has
biphasic pulse currents because they relieve
muscles in order to reduce muscle fatigue and
ensure safe use.
Frequency of pulses
The frequency indicates the number of pulses
per second. It is displayed in Hz (Hertz). It de-
termines the types of muscle fibres responding
as a priority. The slow-responding fibres react
instead to the low pulse frequencies up to 15 Hz
whereas the rapid-response fibres only react
from about 35 Hz.
In the presence of pulses between approxi-
mately 45 and 70 Hz, the muscles contract
continually and quickly tire. The higher pulse
frequencies can therefore be used as a prior-
ity for rapid strength training and maximum
strength training.
Width of pulses
It indicates the length of a pulse in microsec-
onds. The width of pulses also determines
the depth of penetration of the current. The
following rule therefore generally applies : the
bigger the muscle mass, the wider the pulses.
Pulse intensity
Setting the level of intensity depends on the
subjective impact of each user and is deter-
mined by the number of parameters such as
the area of application, skin irritation, skin
thickness and the quality of contact with the
electrodes. Convenient control must be effec-
tive but should never produce unpleasant sen-
sations such as, for example, pain at the appli-
cation site. Whereas a slight tingling indicates
that the energy from stimulation is sufficient,
any setting that causes pain must be avoided.
In the event of prolonged use, adjustment may
be necessary due to the adjustment processes
over time at the application site.

Variation in the pulse
parameters controlled
by the cycle
In some cases, all the tissue structures must
be covered at the application site by using
several pulse parameters. On the digital TENS/
EMS, the existing programmes automatically
undergo a cyclical modification of the pulse
parameters. This also has a preventive effect
on the fatigue of the various muscle groups
at the application site. The digital TENS/EMS
includes logical pre-setting of the current's
parameters. You have the option, however, of
modifying the intensity of the pulses at any
time when using it.
