Requirements for UL Listing and CSA Certification

Because these telephone sets for explosive atmospheres are UL listed and CSA certified, they are
designed to provide security against ignition of the surrounding atmosphere. All parts of the apparatus
which might produce an electrical spark are completely enclosed. All passages to the outside are made
so that any spark or flame which might be created in the set will be extinguished before reaching the
outside atmosphere.

Precautions

The presence of explosion-proof wiring devices on electrical wiring and apparatus shall be considered as
evidence that the location is likely to be hazardous. Consult the National Electrical Code and local
building code.
WARNING: Under no circumstances should ordinary (non-explosive atmosphere)
telephone apparatus or wiring be installed in an area designated Class I or Class II.
Use the following precautions:
Avoid striking tools on metal objects and against concrete, stone, or any substance that
might produce a spark.
Do not use test equipment capable of producing an electrical spark in an explosive
atmosphere.
Under no circumstances shall explosion-proof apparatus be unlocked or covers removed
without first disconnecting line wires at the protector and disconnecting commercial power
from any auxiliary signals or relays.
All apparatus should be completely assembled before connecting the line wires at the
protector and the power to the signals.
It is extremely important that any broken or worn part be replaced. Also, correct any abnormal conditions,
however minor, without delay in order to maintain maximum protection. Periodic inspection of the
apparatus should be specified locally at intervals consistent with local specifications.

Installation of Conduit and Wire

The Customer's electrical contractor shall consult the National Electrical Code and local building code
before installing telephone conduit. Should a building permit and/or inspection be required by local
building code, the Customer (or the Customer's electrical contractor) is responsible for payment of all
fees, posting permit placards, arranging inspections, etc. All telephone conduit fittings must be approved
explosive atmosphere types in accordance with the National Electrical Code and local building code. An
indoor or outdoor protector must be installed with the telephone line wire outside the hazardous area in
accordance with the National Electrical Code and local building code.
WARNING: The Customer's electrical contractor shall insure that the conduit is installed
and sealed according to the National Electrical Code and local building code so that no
gases, vapors, or dust can enter the conduit.
