Introduction
The following general information and safety requirements are for telephone sets used in locations having
Class I (explosive gases or vapors) or Class II (combustible dusts) atmosphere conditions. These
telephone sets which include
The 520B (rotary dial) telephone
The 2520B (touch-tone dial) telephone
are listed by the UL and certified by the CSA for use in explosive atmospheres.
NOTE: The classifying of hazardous locations is not the responsibility of Lucent Technologies.
Information concerning the classification should be provided by the customer in accordance with the latest
issue of the National Electrical Code. If any doubt or disagreement exists, the local inspection authority
should be consulted.
The National Electrical Code classifies explosive atmosphere conditions at a site into Classes (listed
above) and then into Groups or "Divisions." The National Electrical Code should be consulted for any
further details.

WARNING: This telephone is not listed for UL or CSA Class I, Group A Atmospheres
which may contain acetylene gas.
Under no circumstances is this telephone apparatus or wiring to be installed in a
location where acetylene gas may become present in the atmosphere.
Telephone sets designed for explosive atmospheres shall be installed only upon proper authorization and
in accordance with the National Electrical Code and local building code. The Customer, the Customer's
electrical contractor, the Customer's local telephone company, and the installer shall have a definitive
understanding regarding the location of the telephone, conduit, and protector in compliance with all
applicable codes.
Atmospheric Conditions
Contains hydrogen, manufactured gas or gases, or
vapors of equivalent hazard.
Contains ethyl ether vapors, ethylene, or cyclopropane.
Contains gasoline, hexane, naphtha, benzene, propane,
alcohol, acetone, benzol, lacquer solvent vapors,
butane, or natural gas.
Contains metal dust, including aluminum, magnesium,
and their commercial alloys and other metals with
similar hazardous characteristics.
Contains carbon black, coal, or coke dust.
Contains flour, starch, or grain dust.
