5.3. Negotiating kerbs

In order to negotiate obstacles more easily, the assistant can use the
tipping aid (Fig. 20). Push the wheelchair with both front wheels up to
the edge. Hold the wheelchair firmly by the push handles with both
hands. Press on one of the tipping aids with one foot (Fig. 21). At the
same time, press downwards with both hands and push the wheelchair

over the kerb. You can also negotiate the kerb backwards. Approach
the kerb backwards. Carefully pull the wheelchair down over the edge.
Make sure you take the load off the front wheels when negotiating the
edge and then place them back down gently.
