Uintah Mallet Steam
Loco #51, Sound
THE PROTOTYPE
The Uintah Railway was built to
haul gilsonite, a solid hydrocarb-
on ore found only in this area on
the border between Colorado and
Utah. To negotiate the sharp cur-
ves and incredible grades of up to
7.5%, the Uintah bought two
modern Mallet locomotives from
Baldwin in 1926 and 1928. Com-
pared to the geared Shay loco-
motives used before, the Mallets
were fast and reliable. To this day,
these locomotives are the largest
narrow gauge locomotives that
ever operated in the United Sta-
tes. When service on the Uintah
Railway was discontinued in
1939, the powerful Mallets were
sold to the Sumpter Valley Rail-
way.
