4. Calibration
Before taking this refractometer in use for the first time, it has to be calibrated by distilled water or water of a
reverse osmosis device. For calibrating, it is important to stick to a temperature of 20 °C.
First of all, open daylight plate and place 3 drops of distilled water on the main prism. Close the daylight plate
carefully avoiding any air bubbles. For about 30 seconds, allow the sample to adjust to the same temperature
as the refractometer. Hold daylight plate in the direction of a light source and look into the eyepiece. The
eyepiece may be turned for focussing. You will see a circular field containing numbers. The upper part of the
field should be blue while the lower part should be white. Look into the eyepiece and turn the calibration screw
until the boundary line between the upper blue field and the lower white field meet exactly on the zero scale.
That is the end of the calibration process. Now you can use this refractometer for measurements of room
temperature of 10 °C – 30 °C.
5. Measurement
The measurement is done the same way as the calibration. You put 2 – 3 drops of the sample on the main prism
and close the daylight plate carefully. If you look through the eyepiece, now, you can see the measured value
as a boundary line of the blue and white zone. You can see the density (kg/l) as well as the salinity in parts per
thousand.
After each use, clean the instrument by using a soft cloth. Don't put it into water since then it might become
foggy and useless. The Refractometer is an optical instrument. It requires careful handling and storage. With
care, this instrument will provide years of reliable service.
