soft
Intended purpose
protect.OA soft is a short knee soft brace
with extension / flexion limit. The
product is exclusively to be used for the
orthotic fitting of the knee and only on
unbroken skin.
Indications
• Conservative treatment of mild to
moderate medial and lateral knee
osteoarthritis
• Overload of the medial and lateral
compartments

Contraindications

None known at present.
Setting the flexion / extension limits
Extension limit wedge (limits extension):
0°, 10°, 20°, 30°, 45°
Flexion limit wedge (limits flexion):
0°, 60°, 75°, 90°
Can be immobilised at: 0°
The medial (inside) and the lateral
(outside) wedge settings must always be
the same.
1. 10° extension wedges are pre-
installed in your knee brace as
standard. They are found in the front
aspect of the brace's hinge joint.
2. To replace the wedges first loosen the
screws in the joint cover, then take the
cover off, the wedges can now be
removed by being gently pulled out in
a forwards direction.
3. To change the silver extension wedge
loosen the screw and pull the wedge
out from the front of the joint. You
will find the replacement wedge in
the wedge set. It is marked with the
corresponding wedge setting. Slide
the new extension wedge into the
front of the joint. Now replace the
screw in the threaded hole and screw
it tight.
4. The flexion wedges are installed from
the back of the joint. Select the
suitable wedge from the wedge set.
Insert the wedge and secure it with
the appropriate screw (enclosed).
5. Bend and flex the brace 'joint' a
couple of times and check that the
wedges are positioned correctly.
Finally, secure the joint cover.
Important notes
Only change the extension and flexion
limits on instruction from your doctor or
orthotist to do so. In order to prevent
hyperextension, always insert extension
wedges or 0° wedges. The wedges define
the exact excursion of the orthosis. In
difficult soft-tissue conditions, e.g.
where the soft-tissues are under
compression, it may be necessary to
insert the larger wedge to limit the joint
movement to the desired excursion. In
addition, make sure that the orthosis
joints are correctly positioned: the
middles of the joints should be level with
the upper border of the patella. The joint
must lie behind the midline of the leg.

Fitting instructions

• Open all straps and the two Velcro
fasteners. Pull the two straps back a
little so they don't hamper you when
you put the brace on.
• Now put your leg into a 45-degree
angle flexion position. Wrap the
• tightly around your leg from the back
and close it with the two Velcro strips
(Image 1),
• Make sure that the kneecap is in the
middle of the patella recess.
• The centres of the brace joints should
be at the top edge of the kneecap and
just behind the lateral centre line of
the leg (image 2).
