5. Select
the two-channel
record
which
contains the loudest
sound in your record library.
6. Play the record and adjust the front amplifier volume to your
ordinary listening level.
.
7. While listening to the loudest passage,
find the meter which
shows
the
maximum
deflection
of the
four
meters.
If the
meter frequently reads in the red zone, the input level will be
so high as to cause distortion
in the decoder section.
Adjust
the rear panel Input LEVEL ADJUST control so that the maxi-
mum
defiecting
meter
shows O VU
reading.

existing system,
you may
skip Step 4.
lf the sound seems to lack bass notes and the position of the
instruments
is obscure, the speakers
and/or the front and back
amplifiers may be phased
improperly.
Check the phasing as
follows (refer to the illustration on page 25).
:
1. Turn on the SQD-2020, and front and back amplifiers.
Make
the "Input Level Adjustment"
on page
18,
if you
have
not
yet done it.
2. Select a conventional two-channel record which contains pro-
minent bass notes.

'f you connect the back OUTPUT

4. Check
the front speaker
phasing:
Set
the front
amplifier's
volume
and balance controls to their usual position.
Turn the
FRONT
RIGHT
and LEFT
LEVEL
controls fully clockwise
and
the BACK
RIGHT
and LEFT LEVEL controls fully counterclock-
wise.
Move
the front speakers
so that they are about 30cm
(one foot) apart and facing each
other.
Play the record and
turn the
MASTER
VOLUME
controt
to a comfortable
level.
Listen to a recorded passage containing prominent bass notes.
Then,
reverse the
connection
to one
of the front
speakers
and listen to the same bass passage again.
If it now sounds
like there is less bass,
the
speakers
were
correctly
phased
and
the
original
connection
should
be
restored.
However,
if the
bass
appears
to
have
increased,
the
speakers
were
originally phased incorrectly and the new
connection
should
be used.
