Adjusting thread tension
Whenanevenamountoftensionisexertedon
boththreads,asmoothevenstitch,knownasa
balancedstitch,isproduced.
Correcttensionisimportantbecausetoomuch
ortoolitlewillweakenyourseamsorcauseyour
fabric to pucker. Makeatestsamplewiththe
fabricandthreadyouplantouseandexamine
it.
Aperfect,wellbalancedstitch(1)willhavethe
needleandbobbinthreadslockedbetweenthe
two layers of fabric with no loops o n t o p o r
bottomandnopuckering.
Too muchtensionwillproduceatightstitch(2)
whichwillcausethefabrictopucker.
• To decreasetension,turnthedialtoalowe r
number.
Too little tensionwillproducealoosestitch(3)
whichwillcauseloopsinyourseam.
• To increasetension,turnthedialtoahigher
number.
