Bis in die 30er-Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts konnte die Höllental-
strecke zwischen Freiburg und Titisee im Schwarzwald wegen
der großen Steigungen nur im Zahnstangenbetrieb befahren
werden. 1932 und 1933 beschaffte die Deutsche Reichsbahn
zehn neue Einheitslokomotiven der Baureihe 85 mit der Achs-
folge 1'E1'. Sie waren so leistungsfähig, dass auch die größten
Steigungen dieser Strecke im Reibungsbetrieb bewältigt werden
konnten.
Die Maschinen wurden mit Ausnahme der 85004 bis 1961 im
Höllental und auf der Schwarzwaldbahn eingesetzt.
Information about the prototype
Due to the steep grades the Hell's Valley line between Freiburg
and Titisee in the Black Forest could only be operated using rack
and cog methods well into the 1930's. In 1932 and 1933 the Ger-
man State Railroad builtten new standard design locomotives of
the class 85 with a 1'E1' (2-10-2) wheel arrangement. They were
so powerful that even the steepest grades of this line could be
surmounted with adhesion operation.
With the exception of locomotive 85004, the units were used in
the Hell's Valley and on the Black Forestline until 1961.

Le trafic sur la ligne du «Höllental», en Forêt Noire, fut assuré par
crémaillère jusqu'aux années 1930 à cause des fortes rampes
de la ligne. En 1932/1933, la Deutsche Reichsbahn à acquis
10 locomotives unifiées du type 151, série 85. La puissance
de ces machines leur permettait d'assurerle trafic par simple
adhérence.
Toutes ces machines, à l'exception de la 85004 jusqu'en 1961, fu-
rent affectées au trafic dans le Höllental et la Schwarzwaldbahn.

Tot in de jaren dertig kon de lijn door het Höllentaltussen Frei-
burg en titisee in het Zwarte Woud vanwege de steile hellingen
slechts als tandradbaanbereden worden. In 1932 en 1933 schafte
de Deutsche Reichsbahn tien nieuwe eenheidslocomotieven
BR 85 met de asindeling 1'E1' aan. Ze hadden zo'n groot vermo-
gen, dat ze in staat waren ook de steilste hellingen van deze lijn
in adhesiebedrijf te overwinnen.
Met uitzondering van de 85004 werden de machines tot 1961 in
het Höllental en op de Schwarzwaldbahn ingezet.
