5. Operating principle
blocfor™ self-retracting fall-arrester ESD:
In the event of a fall, the mechanism located inside the
blocfor™ self-retracting fall-arrester instantaneously
locks by means of a ratchet system and the fall is
stopped gently by a tear-type energy absorber with
a stop value of less than 6 kN. When climbing and/
or descending, the lanyard operator is maintained
tensioned by the return spring.
In addition the blocfor™ ESD automatic retraction fall
arresterisfi  ttedwithasafetysystemguaranteeingthat
the fall of an operator is stopped in all safety even if the
fall occurs when the strap or the rope has completely
come out of the blocfor™ ESD automatic retraction fall
arrester.

6.1. Vertical use

The air clearance H (fi gure 1.g) is the free space under
thefeetoftheoperator.Itisdefi  nedbytheformula:
H = 3 m + Hp
which breaks down as follows:
3m=heightoffallwiththeblocfor™self-retractingfall-
arrester: 2 metres + 1 meter security.
Hp=maximumdefl ectionoftheanchorpointdefi  nedin
the instructions for use of the anchor point.
6.2. Horizontal use
TheverticalclearanceH(fi  gure1.h)isthefreespace
below the operator during horizontal use. This is
defi  nedbytheformulabelow:
H = 4 m + Hp
which breaks down as follows:
4 m = fall height with the blocfor™ automatic retraction
fall arrester in horizontal use: 3 metres + 1 metre for
additional safety.

It is strictly forbidden:
•  t o install or use the blocfor™ self-retracting fall-
arrester without fi  rsthaving been authorised, trained
andrecognisedtobequalifi  edintheuseofthedevice,
or otherwise, without the supervision of an authorised
technician, trained and recognised to be qualifi  ed in
use of the device.
•  t ousetheblocfor™self-retractingfall-arresterifany
of the markings are not legible.
•  t o install or use the blocfor™ self-retracting fall-
arresterwithoutfi  rsthavingcarriedoutthepreliminary
checks.
•  t o use a blocfor™ self-retracting fall-arrester which
has not been covered by a periodical inspection over
the past 12 months by a technician having authorised
re-useinwriting.
•  t oconnecttheblocfor™self-retractingfall-arresterto
a point which has not been covered by a periodical
inspection over the past 12 months by a qualifi  ed
technicianhavingauthorisedre-useinwriting.
•  t o use the blocfor™ self-retracting fall-arrester for
any other application other than for automatic fall
protection of workers.
•  t o secure the blocfor™ self-retracting fall-arrester by
any other means other than its anchor point.
•  t o use the blocfor™ self-retracting fall-arrester in
contradiction with the information specifi  ed in the
section "15. Life cycle".
•  t ousetheblocfor™self-retractingfall-arresterasafall
protection system for more than 1 person.
•  t o use the blocfor™ self-retracting fall-arrester by a
person whose weight, equipment included, is greater
than 150 kg.
•  T ousetheblocfor™self-retractingfall-arresterwitha
load of between 100 kg and 150 kg (total weight of the
user, equipment and tools) if any component in the
fall-arrestsystemhasalowermaximumload.
•  t ousetheblocfor™self-retractingfall-arresterifithas
served to stop a fall.
•  t o use the blocfor™ self-retracting fall-arrester as a
means of suspension or to hold a work position.
•  t o use the blocfor™ self-retracting fall-arrester in a
highly corrosive or explosive atmosphere.
•  t ousetheblocfor™self-retractingfall-arresteroutside
thetemperaturerangespecifi  edinthismanual.
•  t o use the blocfor™ self-retracting fall-arrester if the
fallclearanceisnotsuffi  cientwithrespecttoafalling
person.
•  t o use the blocfor™ self-retracting fall-arrester if
any obstacle is located along the fall path or on the
swingingpathwhenusedinahorizontalconfi  gu r ation.
•  t ousetheblocfor™self-retractingfall-arresterifyou
are not in good physical condition.
•  t ousetheblocfor™self-retractingfall-arresterifyou
are pregnant.
