The original
In 1957, Krupp supplied the Deutsche Bundesbahn (German Federal Railway) with the steam
locomotives 10 001 and 10 002. Originally, they were intended to be a replacement for the
01.03, 18.5 and 39 series. Both machines were equipped with partial panelling. As a result, the
cylinder groups were protected against excessive cooling as well as soiling and the air resis-
tance was also reduced. Initially, the two test locomotives belonging to the series had dierent
types of ring. To begin with, the 10 001 was coal-red and equipped with an additional oil
ring system; the 10 002 on the other hand, was equipped with a primary oil ring system from
the very start and the 10 001 was also converted to the primary oil ring system at a later date.
The locomotives had an excessively high axle load and were only permitted to travel on certain
main lines. They were assigned to the Bebra depot up until 1962 before being transferred to the
Kassel depot and were only deployed alongside the 01.10 series by the Kassel depot until 1967
prior to express trains and high-speed trains.
