During Automatic Retracting Fall Arrester use at a factor of 1 the free clearance
under the user must be at least 2.30m.
Swinging risk: When the fall arrester enters into action,
to avoid injury due to impact, for instance against the
building, whenever possible choose an anchorage point
located vertically above the user (see figure 4).
Webbing with tested edge-strength:
The edge-tearing strength of the retractable webbing with an energy absorber has been tested.
This Miller® by Sperian logo confirms approval for horizontal applications with an edge radius of less than 0.5
mm without burrs, bearing in mind that the angle of the edge must be at least 90° (see figure 5).
This type of test is used for validating the use of the retractable energy absorber on an edge similar to those of
rolled steel profiles, wooden beams or rounded and lined handrails ...
The anchorage point must not be lower than the level of the floor where the user is located.
To minimise the pendular effect in case of fall, the user must limit movements to the side in the working zone to
1,5 m aither of teh anchoraage axis; otherwise, use a lifeline access in conformity with EN 795 classC.
If risk analysis performed before the works begin reveals that the
fall edge is a «particularly sharp and (or) is not free of burrs» (e.g.:
edge of terrace roof without facing, sheet metal cladding or sharp
edge of concrete) or if the angle is less than 90° (see figure 6), it is
necessary to:
- take suitable precautions before work begins to avoid any risk of
falling over the top of the edge in question
- install edge protection,
- contact the manufacturer
The necessary clearance under the edge must be at least3,80m.
If the Automatic Retractable Fall Arrester equipped with an anchoring device in class C according to standard EN
795 is used, it is also necessary to allow for the reflection of the horizontal work positioning support to calculate
the clearance needed beneath the user.
Avoid any risks of cable slack or of pendulum falls.
Remember that even if the personal fall protection system is used in a conforming manner, falling over an edge
is liable to cause an injury (for instance, by impact against part of the structure, against scaffolding tubes or
against any other sharp edges).
Rescue :
After an accident, rescue must take place within 20 minutes(trauma from suspension). The rescue equipment
and devices (for instance, descending cables) must be operational and procedures suitable for rescuing the users
must be defined.
Users must have been given proper training about use. The operating capacity of the rescue equipment shall be
the subject of regular checks. Rescue procedures require regular practice.
Example of rescue equipment: Miller AG 10 Hub automatic descending system.
