Operation
The BAT 171 is supplied with power from the 12 V
battery to be tested or from the internal batteries. The
BAT 171 is provided with protection against incorrect
polarity, overvoltage and overheating.
5.1
Preparation
Before connecting the BAT 171, use a wire brush and a
mixture of natron and water to clean the battery posts.
For testing 12 V batteries with side posts, attach and
secure post adapters.
!
Never use steel screws as measurement points. The
test results may be biased if no post adapters are
attached or use is made of worn or contaminated
post adapters. To prevent damage, the post adapters
are not to be tightened by more than a quarter turn
using a wrench.
i
When testing a 12 V battery in a vehicle, switch off
all additional loads, remove the ignition key and
close the doors.
5.2
Switch-on
¶
Connect the BAT 171 by way of battery clips to
a 12 V battery.
"
The software version installed is displayed for two

"
Depending on the chosen setting (refer to
Section 5.3.1), either the measured battery
voltage is displayed or the battery test is started
immediately.
i
The settings in the main menu "MENU" can also be
altered without connecting the BAT 171 to a 12 V
battery. In this case, switch on the BAT 171 by
pressing the <Menu> key (power supply via internal AA
