APPLICATION
UV-C equipment has been used for a long period of time to keep the water of aquaria and ponds
free from floating algae and to decrease the number of germs. UV-C filtration therefore guaran-
tees that you will obtain crystal clear water and a healthy water environment for both fish and
water plants. Its action is based on ultraviolet radiation, which attacks the cells of animal and
vegetable organisms. As the water to be filtered is directly passed along the quartz glass in a thin
layer, the action is optimum. W e advise you to let the UV-C lamp burn continuously during the
pond season. In the winter season you should keep the apparatus switched off and store it in a
dry place to protect it from freezing.
INSTALLATION
The UV-C Unit 9 Watt is used in the Cross-Flow Biofill and Clear Control 25.
The UV-C Unit 18 Watt is used in the Cross-Flow Biofill, Giant Biofill XL and Clear Control 50.
The UV-C Unit 36 Watt is used in the Giant Biofill XL and Clear Control 75.
The UV-C Unit 55 Watt is used in the Clear Control 75 and 100.
These Velda filters have a separate compartment, meaning that the UV-C radiation does not
come in contact with the filter material. Therefore, the micro-organisms in the filter material are
not damaged. Install the splashproof unit in the special compartment of the filter at the place
of the screw cap. Place the ballast in an area protected against rain and sun. First remove
the plastic cover from the PL UV-C lamp. The spacer protects the UV-C lamp during use (18, 36
and 55 Watt). Place the spacer round the lamp before you place the lamp in the quartz glass.
Completely unroll the cable and make sure that the rubber ring is correctly positioned. Activate
the UV-C lamp, after it has been fully assembled, only by connecting the plug to a grounded
socket. Remove the plug from the socket before loosening the screw cap with the lamp socket
for maintenance. For your safety, the lamp switches off automatically when you loosen the
screw cap (if the plug is still in the socket). You should then unplug the unit. You can switch the
UV-C unit back on after three minutes by plugging it in again.
SAFETY REGULATIONS
First remove the plastic cover from the PL UV-C lamp. UV-C radiation is dangerous! Avoid
exposure to the eyes and skin at all times. Exclusively inspect the functioning of the lamp through
the transparent screw cap. Exposure to harmful UV-C radiation is possible if the device is used
wrongly or damaged. If the apparatus or its flex should become damaged, stop using the UV-C
unit. Always install the splashproof unit in the special compartment of the filter at the place of the
screw cap. Please be sure that it is out of the reach of children. Place the ballast in a area
protected against the sun and rain. Exclusively use grounded sockets with closing cover. Prevent
the plug and the receptacle form getting moist. Please provide a good quality grounded
connection to the electric mains and use an earth leakage circuit breaker rated 30 mA. If the flow
of the water stagnates, for example as a result of blockage of a defective pump, the UV-C lamp
should be switched off at once. When carrying out activities in or near the pond, all devices that
are immersed or in touch with the water should be switched off. Always remove the plug from the
socket before loosening the screw cap with the lamp socket for maintenance.
MAINTENANCE
In order to maintain optimum action of this UV-C Unit, the quartz glass should be cleaned at least
3 times a year. To achieve this, you should proceed as follows: switch off the power supply of
the UV-C and the pump installation by unplugging it. Now carefully remove the quartz tube
and clean it, using lukewarm suds. Any lime deposit should be removed with the help of vinegar.
The effective lifetime of the PL UV-C lamp is about 7,500 burning hours. If used continuously, the
