INSTRUCTION FOR RIDING ROLLER SKATES
First start practicing in an area where there are no other participants in traffic or ask someone to lead you through your first steps. Try to stand up
on the roller skates by maintaining your ankles straight at the same time. You should get used to the correct position of the inline skates in order to
achieve the best balance possible. Move the center of gravity down by bending the knees and ankles and bending forwards from the hips. Your
center of gravity now should be right over the roller skates. Push yourselves with the inside end of the one roller skate, which should be placed at
angle with the intended direction of movement and slide with your entire weight on the other skate. Return the first foot under your body with a
circular movement and after that use the other roller skate to move forwards again. Repeat this several times and after a short time you will learn
how to ride. To turn to the right, you should move the center of gravity first with the inside side of your left foot and the outside edge of your right
foot. After that turn the hips and legs to the right while at the same time you maintain your legs tight and your shoulders – parallel to the ground.
Let the momentum move you until you stop. A thing that would help you with the turning is moving your hands in the direction in which you intend
to turn. Sudden moves and twisting of the upper body may result in loss of balance.
BASIC STEPS WHEN ROLLER SKATING
1.
Stand still – Figure 1: Place your feet apart to the width of the shoulders, keeping them slightly folded at the knees, as you are slightly
squatted. Bend slightly forward in a comfortable position.
2.
Roller skating – Figure 2: With your heels gathered and your toes pointing outwards, start slowly walking forward, first right, then left,
then right, and so on. Keep squatting slightly and keep your heels under your body so you can more easily keep your balance.
3.
Roller skating– Figure 3: Learn how to slide. Extend every step you take by sliding for a while. Press with one foot and slide with the other
until you lose momentum, then shift the slide to the first leg. As you slide on one leg, keep the other above the ground so as not to
interfere with your movement. Practice turning left and right as you slide. When turning right, tilt your body slightly to the right. When
turning left, tilt your body slightly to the left, always keeping your body in a slightly squat position.
STOPPING WITH THE ROLLER SKATES
The roller skates do not have a device for starting. They have a device for stopping which is not automatically activated. Stopping is the most
important skill while riding roller skates and must be mastered at all costs. Adapt your speed to your skills and ride with foresight. On an even
surface, beginners can stop with sliding while their momentum decreases. Use your arms in order to maintain balance. The more advanced riders
stop with the so called technique "stopping with a heel". The brake is located at the rear side of the left and right roller skate.
It is not suitable for jumps, stunts, or acrobatic roller sports.
