Resistance verification
Use an appropriate multimeter to measure the resistance between the black
wires (figure 2).
If an automatic multimeter is used, the reading will be taken instantly. If the
multimeter is not automatic, set it to 200 Ω for a cable under 200 Ω or at the
higher value for a cable over 200 Ω. The resistance value of the cable is indicated
on the label attached to the end of the cold lead. Compare the test result with
the resistance indicated on the label. Record the results on the limited warranty
card. The reading should be similar to the resistance indicated on the mat label
(± 10%). The cable's resistance was established in an environment at 20 °C
(68 °F). If you obtain a reading that does not correlate with these parameters
contact FLEXTHERM Customer Service at 1 800 353-9843.
Insulation verification
Use a megohmmeter to verify the integrity of the cable insulation. Connect
the instrument's black cable to the system ground wire (the green lead) and
the red cable to one of the heating elements (black leads) and then send a
1,000 V current (figure 3). The result should read "infinite" ohms. Should there
be a current leakage between the heating element and the insulation, the
instrument will indicate a result between 0 - 500 MΩ.
Record the results
IMPORTANT: Record the results obtained for these two tests
on the limited warranty card every time you perform them:
before removing the orange tie, after the mat is secured to the
floor and after the concrete has been poured. These results
must be recorded on the limited warranty card in order to
preserve the system's limited warranty.
Should the results obtained not comply with the mat specifications, do not
remove the orange tie, contact FLEXTHERM Customer Service at 1 800 353-9843.
Concrete Mat Xpress Installation Guide
Preliminary electrical installation
Circuit
FLEXTHERM's floor heating systems should be connected to electrical circuits
dedicated to heating. The amperage drawn by the mat, as indicated on the
product label, will determine the required circuit intensity. Please take note
that the maximum load that can be supported by the FLEXTHERM thermostat
is 15 A. More than one circuit will be necessary should the system require
more than 15 A. For a load greater than 15 A, use the appropriate number of
Figure 1
expansion units. A FLEXTHERM thermostat can control an unlimited number
of expansion units.
For further information regarding their connection please refer to the
literature included with those products, also available on the FLEXTHERM
web site at www.flextherm.com.
Electrical connection box
Determine where the thermostat connection box will be installed. It should
be in an accessible location and at an appropriate height in the room where
the system will be installed. Use an expanded connection box for the system
connection (plan one connection box for each 15 A circuit). A 3 m (10 ft) cold
lead, used to make the electrical connection to the thermostat, is located on
one end of your FLEXTHERM Mat. Please note that the floor probe is included
in the thermostat box.
Figure 2
Cold lead
The cold lead is the non-heating portion of the heating cable used to make
the connection between the system and the thermostat. The cold lead is flat
and black and is connected to the heating cable through a mechanical joint
(figure 4). Just like the heated portion of the cable, the mechanical joint must
be embedded in the concrete.
Slide the cold lead inside a cable conduit according to the method identified
by your local electrical code.
Ensure that the mechanical joint is attached outside of the cable conduit and
in the zone where concrete will be poured.
In a multiple mat installation, repeat these steps for each mat installed.
Attention: Keep the extremity of the cold lead (with the stripped wires for
thermostat connection) dry before and during installation.
