Tow hitch (removable tow ball)
for the BMW 3 Series (E 46/2/3/4/C)
Specialist knowledge required.
The installation time is approx. 3 – 3.5 hours for the
E46/2/4 and 4 hours for the E46/3/C.
The installation time may vary depending on the
condition of the car and the equipment in it.
If it is retrofitted in the Federal Republic of
Germany, the tow hitch must be approved
and an entry made in the vehicle
registration document pursuant to § 19 of
the Road Traffic Act. If the car is registered
outside the FRG, refer to the
corresponding national regulations.
Important notes on the installation
The frame and the cover for the bumper trim must
also be ordered for cars with the M aerodynamics
kit (SA 715) (see EPC for part numbers).
All the work is shown on a left-hand drive model.
Some of the connections on a right-hand drive
model are the opposite way round.
If the specified PIN slots are already in use,
bridges, double crimps or parallel end stops are to
be used.
The body sealant and underseal is to be removed
from all body support areas for the tow hitch. The
areas must then be cleaned with benzene. Coat
bare body areas with anti-corrosion paint.
Screw tightening instructions
- Position all screws and nuts for the tow hitch
by hand and initially only tighten slightly.
- Align the tow hitch.
- Tighten the screws and nuts in the following
sequence with a torque of 59 Nm:
1. Hexagonal nuts M10 with washers.
2. Hexagonal screws M10 x 30 mm.

described in the owner's handbook for the tow
hitch.

Ring spanner, size 13 mm
Open-ended spanners, sizes 8 mm and 13 mm

1. Preparations

Conduct a short test

Disconnect the battery

Remove the glove box in full

Remove the side trim in the footwell on the
right-hand side

Remove the trim in the footwell on the left-hand
side

Remove the light switch centre
-
Remove the trims on the door sills at the front
and, if applicable, at rear right

Remove the bottom right B pillar trims, if
applicable
-
Remove the door sill trims at the front and rear
on the right-hand side

Remove the bottom right-hand B column trim
-
Remove the rear seat bench
-
Remove the rear seat backrest
-
Remove the boot mat
-
Remove the right-hand trim in the boot
-
Remove the trim on the boot sill
-
Remove the trim in the boot in front of the spare
wheel trough (E46/3 only)

Remove the rear bumper
-
Remove the rear impact absorbers (not
required)

Remove the side trim on the right-hand side at
the rear (E46/C only)
