■ If the engine has just run, do not touch the muffler or the spark plug because of the risk of burns.
1.
Remove the cap and unscrew the spark plug with a spark plug wrench [Fig. 35];
2.
Examine the spark plug carefully, replace it if deposits on the electrodes are important or if the
insulation is cracked or broken. Clean the spark plug with a wire brush;
3.
Measure the spacing of the electrodes with a set of shims; it should be between 0.6 and 0.7 mm
[Fig. 36]. If adjustment is necessary, simply twist carefully the electrode side;
4.
Check the condition of the sealing washer, then screw the spark plug by hand;
5.
Using a spark plug wrench, give an extra 1/2 turn in the case of a new spark plug to compress its
washer, or a 1/8 to 1/4 turn in the case of a used spark plug and replace the cap of the spark plug.
□ The spark plug must be properly tightened, otherwise it may heat up considerably and damage
the engine.
9.3. SERVICING THE AIR FILTER
NOTE
The air filter must remain perfectly clean. A dirty filter, caused by a poor fitting or a poor
maintenance, shall damage the pump and cause engine wear. The air filter must be perfectly
clean, at any time.
□ Do not clean the filtering elements with kerosène, gasoline or petrol oil.
1.
Remove the holding wing nut [(1) Fig. 37];
2.
Remove the protection cover [(2) Fig. 37];
3.
Remove the holding wing nut [(3) Fig. 37] of the air filter elements;
4.
Remove the elements [(4) and (5) Fig. 37] and separate them;
5.
Check that both elements are not torn or obstructed;
6.
The urethane foam [(4) Fig. 37]:
— Wash and clean urethane foam using a special detergent for air filter. Immerse the element in
a solution of lukewarm water and non-foaming household detergent, then rinse, or;
— clean it in a non-flammable solvent;
— then let it dry completely. Dip the element in clean engine oil and squeeze it to remove excess
oil. If the amount of oil left in the foam is excessive, the engine will smoke during the next
starts.
