10. Parts to be checked
When performing regular checks, the following must be taken into account:
Check that the stringers / legs (upright parts) are not bent, curved, distorted,
dented, torn, corroded or rotten
Check that the stringers / legs around the fixation points for other parts are in
proper condition
Check that the fasteners (usually rivets, screws, bolts) are not missing and
that they are not loose or corroded
Check that the rungs / steps are not missing and that they are not loose,
heavily worn out, corroded or damaged
Check that the hinges between the front and back side are not damaged,
loose or corroded
Check that the locking mechanism remains in the horizontal position, that the
rear rails and corner braces are not missing and that they are not bent, loose,
corroded or damaged
Check that the rung hooks are not missing, not damaged, loose or corroded
and that they can be properly hooked into the rungs
Check that the guide brackets are not missing, not damaged, loose or corroded
and that they engage properly into the stringer
Check that the ladder feet / foot caps are not missing and that they are not
loose, heavily worn out, corroded or damaged
Check that the entire ladder is free from any contaminants
(e.g. dirt, paint, oil or grease)
Check that the locking catches (if available) are not damaged or corroded and
that they function properly
Check that no parts or fasteners of the platform (if available) are missing and
that the platform is not damaged or corroded
If one of the checks above does not produce a satisfac-
tory result, the ladder should NOT be used.
For specific types of ladders, other parts specified by the
manufacturer must be taken into account.
