The original
The „Deutsche Reichsbahn" had a new passenger train locomotive developed on the basis of
the proven tank of the series 50. Originally it was designed as a stronger machine to follow up
and replace the P 8 and G 10 with a boiler that could withstand higher pressure. However the
two test locomotives from 1941 were not put into serial production because from 1942 on only
types were in demand that were important for the war effort. After 1945 the two prototypes
ended up at the DR whereas the 23 001, from then on as the 35 2001-2, was still in service until
1974 at the VES-M in Halle. They were used as break locomotives (with Reko boiler) and were
equipped with a Riggenbach pneumatic break. Originally the machine was equipped with a
Trofimov adjusting slide, however it proved to be unreliable and consequently it was outfitted
with a Winterthur pressure equalizer. In the 1950 is was put into service for a short time with a
tender 2'2'T34 but because the water reservoir was not sufficient it got the one from the series
50. Amongst aficionados the 23 001 is considered as one of the most balanced and best desi-
gned steam locomotives of its time.
