Additional information for 'Fast Electric Bikes'*
The Fast Electric Bike is an electric bicycle that provides assistance that does not stop at 25 km/h, as long as one keeps
pedaling. The maximum assisted speed is higher than provided by a standard Pedelec. Note, though, that the actual
maximum speed that you can reach depends first and foremost on how strongly you pedal.
*'Fast' Electric bikes are not available in all European countries.
European Type Approval
Legally, the Fast Electric Bike is no longer considered a 'bicycle' but a 'lightweight moped'. It has European Type Approval
(Class L1e) as such, with regards to Directive 2002/24/EC.
Fast Electric Bikes do have a throttle, which allows riding them up to 18 km/h, using motor power only. This means that
up to this speed your Fast Electric Bike can be used as an E-Bike, rather than as a Pedelec. Above 18 km/h, the motor will
assist pedaling. The maximum power of the Bosch motor on your Fast Electric Bike is limited to 350 W.
The technical equipment of these Fast Electric Bikes is almost identical to that on 25 km/h Pedelecs.
The following parts are additional and/or different:
• Rear view mirror • Insurance plate / license plate and holder for this plate • Throttle on the remote • Extra reflectors
• Slightly different brake levers • Type-approval plate on the frame • An unique VIN number engraved on the frame
(VIN = Vehicle Identification Number).
Notice. These additional parts are all part of the type approval. It is not allowed to remove or exchange them for other (non-certified)
equipment. This also applies to the fork, tires, headlight, rear light, brakes, kickstand, motor, battery pack and controller.
Local legislation/rules*
• The legal rules to use a Fast Electric Bike vary per country.
You must comply with the local legal rules about the minimum age of the rider, driver license, insurance, insurance /
license plate, traffic and maximum speed regulations, etc. with regards to the L1e type approval of your Fast Electric Bike.
• Be aware that the maximum speed of your Fast Electric Bike may not be allowed in all countries.
• For a Fast Electric Bike, third party insurance is mandatory.
• In many countries, wearing a helmet is mandatory for these bikes.
Even, when wearing a helmet is not mandatory in your country, we strongly recommend to always wear a helmet for your own safety.
*Notice. The local legislation/ rules may be subject to changes in time.
Advices for use
• Technically, riding is the same as the Pedelec bikes, except that the assistance does not stop at 25 km/h, as long as one
keeps pedaling.
• Your Fast Electric Bike is still a bicycle. The bike allows riding up to 18 km/h on motor power only (using the throttle),
but this is not recommended because this strongly limits the range of the bike.
• The maximum range on one battery charge depends very much on your style of use.
• Due to the higher speed that can be reached, be prepared to find the range slightly shorter than on regular Pedelec bikes
that have a maximum assistance speed of 25 km/h.
• Be aware that other road users may not expect a bicycle to go this fast. Ride accordingly.
