The pads are prefilled with blood and can be
used for practice immediately after unpacking and
assembly. To remove a pad, simply disconnect the
pulse tube and lift out the pad.
Closing the torso
Place the head end of the outer shell at an angle
down against the head end of the inner shell. At
the waist end of the outer shell, pull the flap out-
wards while pressing inwards with your thumb.
Lower the outer shell in place over the inner
shell until it fits snugly over the pads. Fig 3.

Refilling pads with simulated blood
The artificial skin and veins are designed to self-
seal after withdrawal of a needle or catheter.
However, since the volume inside the enclosed
veins is limited, it is sometimes necessary to
replace blood that is lost during practice or when
"flash back" is insufficient. A bottle of simulated
blood is enclosed with each Laerdal IV Torso.
To refill, lift off the outer shell of the torso. Place
two catheters into the tip of the long vein
extending from the pad. Fill a syringe with
simulated blood and inject carefully into one of
the catheters, allowing air to pass out of the
other catheter until the vein is filled. Be careful
not to inject too much blood into the veins at
once, since this will cause excessive pressure,
leading to leakage of blood out through previous
punctures in the veins.
Apart from simple refilling, this technique can
be used to simulate various degrees of blood
pressure.
Pulse simulation
The arteries in the soft pads do not contain
simulated blood, only air. When the pads are
connected to the pulse tubes on the inner torso
shell, the external pulse bulb can be used to
simulate a palpable pulse on the soft pads.
Maintenance
- When withdrawing a catheter from the pad,
press a cotton or gauze pad over the point of
venipuncture. This will limit the amount of
bloodstain on the skin of the pad.
- Use latex or vinyl gloves when handling the
IV Torso. This will reduce the risk of staining
the pads.
- To remove stains from simulated blood on
the pads, wipe the pads in lukewarm water
and allow them to dry.
