In principle, three types of raw wool
fibers can be used for needle felting:
batting (wide sheets), roving (long
ropes), or tops (long, combed ropes).
The words roving, tops, fleece, and
even sliver are used interchangeably.
The two most common fibers are
mohair and "fairytale" or "fairy" wool,
which is high quality carded unspun
fiber obtained from Merino sheep.
When needle felting wool, either dry or
Felting material
wet felting, wool shrinks by about a third
of its original size. If the object is to have
a specific size, this shrinkage must be
taken into account beforehand.
!!! NOTE !!!
The wool should always be torn and
not cut because the different lengths
of fibers felt together much more easily
for a firmer bond.
