About this Documentation

Documentation validity
This documentation applies to the following products:
W
Sensor Series SN6 (ATEX) with the material number R412000823
This documentation is intended for installers, operators, service technicians and
systems owners. This documentation contains important information on the safe
and appropriate assembly, operation, and maintenance of the SN6 series sensor and
how to remedy simple malfunctions yourself.
O Read this documentation completely, especially chapter 2 „Notes on Safety" on
page 1 before working with the SN6 series sensor.
Additional documentation
The SN6 sensor is a system component. Also follow the documentation for the other
system components.
Presentation of information
In this documentation, uniform safety instructions, symbols, terms, and
abbreviations are used. These are described in the following subsections.
Safety instructions
In this documentation, there are warning notices before the steps whenever there is
a danger of personal injury or damage to the equipment. The measures described to
avoid these hazards must be followed.
Safety instructions are set out as follows:
Type and source of risk
Consequences of non-observance
O Measures to avoid these hazards
Indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or
serious injury.
Indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in minor or
moderate injuries.
Indicates damage: the product or the environment may be damaged.
If this information is disregarded, the product cannot be used or operated
optimally.

Notes on Safety
About this section
The product has been manufactured according to the accepted rules of safety and
current technology. Even so, there is a risk of injury or damage if the following
general safety instructions and the specific warnings given before the steps in this
documentation are not observed.
O Read these instructions completely before working with the SN6 sensor.
O Keep these instructions in a location where they are accessible to all users at all
times.
O Always include the relevant operating instructions when you pass the SN6
sensor on to third parties.
Intended use
O The SN6 sensor is only intended for industrial applications.
O Use is permitted only within the performance limits listed in the technical data.
O The sensor is to be used to detect magnetic fields in explosive areas.
Intended use includes having read and understood these instructions completely,
especially the section „Notes on Safety".
Improper use
O The sensor must not be used for any application not stated in these instructions.
O The sensor must not be used under any operating conditions not stated in these
instructions.
Personnel qualifications
Assembly and commissioning require basic electrical and pneumatic knowledge.
Assembly and commissioning may therefore only be carried out by qualified

electrical or pneumatic personnel or an instructed person under the direction and
supervision of qualified personnel.
Qualified personnel are those who can recognize possible hazards and institute the
appropriate safety measures due to their professional training, knowledge, and
experience, as well as their understanding of the relevant directives pertaining to the
work to be done. Qualified personnel must observe the rules relevant to the subject
area and have qualifications according to TRBS 1203.
General safety instructions
O Observe the local regulations to protect the environment in the country of use and
to avoid workplace accidents.
O Do not change or modify the device.
O Only use the device within the performance range provided in the technical data.
O Do not place any improper mechanical loads on the product under any
circumstances.
O The warranty will not apply if the system is incorrectly assembled.
O Observe the requirements in the installation regulations.
Safety instructions related to the product and technology
During assembly
O Make sure the relevant system component is not under pressure or voltage
before assembling the product or when connecting and disconnecting plugs.
O Only qualified persons (trained specialists) are permitted to install the electrical
connector.
O Observe the general technical rules for the selection and operation of devices.
O Take suitable measures to prevent unintended activation or impermissible
interference.
O Do not place any mechanical loads, such as deflection, torsion, or impact loads,
on the sensor. Install the sensor in a protected location.
During operation
O Only commission the sensor after it has been completely assembled, as well as
correctly connected and tested.
O Observe the operating conditions and data imprinted on the relevant sensor or
stated on its rating plate.
O Do not disconnect plugs or lines when the sensor is under voltage.
O Do not loosen any cables, lines, or valves if the system is under voltage or
pressure.
ATEX – Information on explosion protection
The ATEX sensors from the SN6 series are certified and labeled according to the
enclosed declaration of conformity.
They can be used in areas
W
with gases, mists or vapors in zone 2
W
with flammable dust particles in zone 22
Explanations on identification
Information on the year of manufacture of the sensor can be found in the 5-digit date
code, which is located on one of the sides next to the rating plate. The first two digits
indicate the year and the last two digits indicate the week.
Danger of an ignition source due to impermissible operating conditions,
connections, and parameters.
Operating the sensor under impermissible operating conditions can result in an
explosion.
O Observe the permissible operating conditions, in particular the ambient
temperature and the mechanical protection for the device.
O Note the limited temperature range for ATEX conditions.
O Do not disconnect the electrical connector, plug connectors, and connecting
cable from the sensor if it is under voltage.
O Do not disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor if it is under
voltage.
O Only mount the SN6 sensor onto pneumatic valves or pneumatic cylinder-
valve units (from AVENTICS GmbH), which have been tested in compliance
with the valid ATEX guidelines or qualified as devices without own potential
source of ignition.
O Observe the relevant Ex guidelines for installation, maintenance, and repair,
especially EN 60079-14.
The device will lose its Ex approval if these instructions are not complied with.
