2 Method of functioning
Basically, MAXIMATOR pumps are operating according to the pres-
sure intensifier principle: a large surface with a low pressure (air
piston) & a small surface with a high pressure (plunger piston).
Continuous delivery is achieved by means of sustained pulsation
that is induced by a pulse-operated 4/2-port directional control
valve (main block valve). The main block valve admits alternatin-
gly the top and bottom side of the air piston. The main block valve
is selected via two 2/2-port directional control valves (pilot valves)
that are actuated mechanically by the air piston in its stop posi-
tions. The pilot valves aerate and vent the operating chamber of
the main block valve. Die restoring force for the main block valve
depends on the driving air. The main block valve has a higher
effective surface in the operating chamber than in the drive cham-
ber to which compressed air is continually admitted. The plunger
piston generates a volume flow by means of check valves (suction
valve, pressure valve). The outlet pressure is calculated by the
transmission ratio between air piston and plunger piston multip-
lied by the drive pressure. I.e., the static ultimate pressure of the
hydraulic can be adjusted by regulation of the supply pressure.
Upon reaching the ultimate pressure the pump comes to a stand-
still and also ceases to consume air. Only a pressure drop on the
hydraulic side or a pressure increase on the drive side will re-start
the pump. Exceptions are pumps for emergency hand operation
since their intake stroke is effected by means of a strong spring
(only available in M22 – M189), and double-acting pumps with
two pump heads. Thus, there is suction and compression during
each stroke. The peculiarity of pumps with two or even drive
pistons is their higher transmission ratio.

4 Safety instructions
MAXIMATOR pumps are manufactured according
to the state of the art and are operationally relia-
ble. But there are hazards in case of misoperation
or improper use:
1 For the health and lives of persons.
1 For the pumps and their accessory parts and
other assets.
1 For the service lives and efficiency of the pumps
and their accessory parts.
Operation, maintenance and assembly of the pumps
may only be performed by persons who are familiar with working
at hydraulic and pneumatic plants and are aware of the hazards
pertaining to such plants. In addition, these operating instructions
shall be closely studied and observed.
4.1 Use as prescribed
The pumps shall be exclusively used for suitable media as detailed
in our medium resistance list. Any other media have to be tested
prior to use by us as to their compatibility with the pump materi-
als. The pump drives have been designed for compressed air up to
10 bar, any other gases have to be tested prior to use by us as to
their compatibility with the pump materials.
Alterations and modifications of the pumps are not admissible for
safety reasons.
