Be sure to note which splint you are using
and follow the instructions that apply to that
splint. Unless otherwise stated, these
instructions apply to all of the splints listed.
INDICATIONS
• To help prevent deformity—possible
indications include arthritis, hypertonicity,
peripheral nerve injuries, and acute synovitis
CONTRAINDICATIONS
• Not for the acute phase of most wrist or hand
fractures
PRECAUTIONS
• These splints are to be fitted initially by a
healthcare professional who is familiar with the
purpose for which they are prescribed. The
healthcare professional is responsible for
providing wearing instructions and precautions
to other healthcare practitioners, care
providers involved in the patient's care, and
the patient.
• If unusual swelling, skin discoloration or
discomfort occurs, use should be
discontinued and a healthcare professional
consulted.
• Be careful that the straps are not so tight that
they interfere with circulation.
• After heating splinting material, always check
its temperature before applying it to the
patient.
CARE AND CLEANING
• The splint will lose its shape in temperatures
over 135°F (57°C). It should be kept away
from sources of heat such as ovens, hot
water, open flames, and sunny car windows.
• The splint can be cleaned with soap and
lukewarm water. The straps can be washed
with soap and water, but the adhesive portion
should not be moistened. The splint and straps
should be allowed to dry thoroughly before
reapplication of the splint.

PROCEDURE
Fit
These splints can be modified for a better fit.
Check the following areas for appropriate
positioning and fit:
• The splint should cover two-thirds of the
length of the forearm.
• The splint should clear bony prominences,
and it should not impinge the thumb web
space.
• The proximal edge of the splint can be
flared for increased comfort.
Modification
Rolyan Deluxe Preformed Resting Pan Mitt
Splint (Product Nos. A764-1–6 and A764-
19–24—see below for A764-7–12)
Rolyan Preformed Resting Pan Mitt Splint
To trim or modify these splints, which are
made from
material, spot-heat the splint with a heat
gun or in a heat pan of water at a
temperature of 150° to 160°F (65°–70°C) for
one minute or until pliable. Heating the
entire splint may cause it to lose its
preformed shape. Polyform has a high
degree of drape—for better results when
modifying the material, shape it with
stroking movements.
Rolyan Mitt Splint with Slot & Loop Strapping
This splint can be modified as described
above, but be careful not to heat the splint
near the strapping or the plastic base for
the slot-and-loop strapping.

Splint (Product Nos. A764-7–12)
Preformed from
Light splinting material, the light splint can
be trimmed without heating. If it requires
reforming, the area needing modification
should be spot-heated with a heat gun or in
a heat pan of water at a temperature of

150° to 160°F (65°–70°C) for 30 seconds,
or just until pliable. A splint made from
Light splinting material will lose its shape
rapidly if submerged in hot water.

material, spot-heat the splint with a heat
gun or in a heat pan of water at a
temperature of 160° to 170°F (70°–75°C)
for 2 minutes or until pliable. Smooth areas
that have been trimmed with the palm of
the hand.
Strapping
Apply straps as desired. Only some splints
include strapping materials. Suggested
strapping for most of the splints is shown in
A. An additional strap may be placed across
the wrist for increased support.
Rolyan Mitt Splint with Slot & Loop Strapping
—Put the splint into position by sliding the
fingers under the elastic strapping. If
necessary, adjust the slot-and-loop
strapping for proper fit—feed it through the
slotted plastic base on the underside of the
splint to increase or decrease the amount of
strapping needed to secure each finger.
—Attach the two hook tabs to the ulnar and
radial borders of the hand portion of the
splint. Attach the elastic strap to the hook
tabs.
—Attach forearm and thumb straps as shown
in B. If desired, trim strap length. An
additional strap may be placed across the
wrist for increased support.
