War,
the rugged "Flying Fortresses"
became
the
symbol
of the Allied determination
to
crush
the
enemy
war
effort through
an
intense
daylight strategic bomb-
ing campaign.
By
the
end
of the
war,
the
B-17
was lauded
as
the principal aircraft type that enabled
the
Eighth Air Force to
transform
the
concept
of
strategic
bombing into
a
proven
weapon of modern warfare.
ln the face of
determined German
opposition,
waves
of
B-17's
and
B-24's
were
directed
toward
critical targets
that
provided the war
effort
of the
Third
Reich
with vital
material.

one
of
aviation's classic
bomber
designs.
The Boeing
B-17
was
the
creatron of a
handful
of
far-sighted
designers
and
aviators
prior to
the outbreak
of World
War
ll.
As
with
any significant
war
machine
that
debuis
during
peacetime,
it
was
surrounded
by
inter-service rivalry and polit-
ical
controversy.
Howwer,
the
undeniable spectre
of
war
in
Europe
during the
late 1930's
ignited interest
in
Boeing's
heavy
bomber.
Although the
B-17F's
bore
the burden
of
the strategic
bombing
effort in
1943,
the
appearance
of the
evolutionary
B{7G
in
the surnmer of
1943
marked the combat appearance
of the
most extensively
produced
B-17
variant.
Literally bris-
tling with
defensive armament,
the "G",
was
fitted with
a
powered
chin
turret designed
to
thwart
head-on
fighter
at-
tacks.
By
the end
of the war, nearly 8700
"G"
model
B-17's
had
been constructed
by
Boeing,
Douglas,
and Vega
facilities.
